Prickly Pear Taqueria Overtakes PIE 950 in Midtown

PIE 950 Pizza Tavern is being gobbled up by its sister restaurant Prickly Pear Taqueria. Both businesses are owned by the same people, but evidently the owners see some benefit in consolidating. Located at Plaza Midtown, Prickly Pear and Pie 950 were both once home to Amore, a short lived Mediterranean restaurant and lounge. Prickly Pear Taqueria opened in May 2009 followed by PIE 950 Pizza Tavern in January of last year.

A restaurant representative tells me that Prickly Pear will offer many of the items that PIE 950 offered including pizza and that there will even be a separate phone that rings on that side of the restaurant. Both businesses were previously for sale, and for all I know, this is all just due to an anticipated sale but it still seems kind of sketchy to me. If there is still going to be a pizza restaurant with its own phone, why do away with the concept and simply call yourself a taqueria?

LOL! Maybe it's their strategy to throw off the customers' palate. Is it Mexican or Italian, who knows, their languages are so similar. Slop is slop in any language.

Been to Pie once the pizza was not great. Prickly Pear is just ok. Last time I was at Prickly Pear a few weeks ago I noticed pizzas waiting to be picked up on the Pear side.

Have a friend who lives in Plaza Midtown so I'd love to see better options in those spaces.

Ate at PIE once...not as good as other "gourmet" pizzerias.

Plaza Midtown is a good site, but the restaurant options need to be upgraded, particularly when it comes to dinner (since J. Christopher's doesn't serve dinner).

This are the same people who owned Mambo Italiano in Vinnings and Sandy Springs. Both failed.
They are full of drama.

Hey Anon,

Yes, you are correct same owners as Mambo Italiano in Vinings and Sandy Springs. Judging from these comments and the comments left here ( http://www.tonetoatl.com/2009/05/prickly-pear-taqueria-soon-to-fix_3673.html ), I'm amazed they have stayed open as long as they have.

Prickly Pear was great when it first opened. Unfortunately, it went downhill in both service and quality fast. Too bad - it's a great idea with limited direct competition in the area.

The owner forgot that I'd you're going to specialize in a food or drink, you should do it well. The pizza was ok but better than the cardboard box franchises nearby. I went with 8 friends to Peickly Pear and we had the worst margaritas we'd ever tasted. We tried a few different kids but they were all pretty bad. The owners need to focus more on actually tasting their products and quality control instead of tweaking the concepts and wondering why nothing ever works.

I've only ever been to Manuel's Tavern at Plaza Midtown. I shop at Publix frequently but I've never been tempted to go in to any of the other food spots :/
