While not to the degree of the burger and certainly not the frozen yogurt crazes, quite a few cupcake shops have sprouted up around town over the past few years. Sweet Pockets was one of the first Atlanta based operations I was aware of, so it’s sad they closed. Additional shops in Atlanta include Lenox Cupcakes on the second floor of Phipps Plaza, The Atlanta Cupcake Factory on North Highland and the recently opened "The Cup" cupcake and coffee shop in TOWN Brookhaven. After months of delays, Atlanta-based Metrotainment Cafes opened their newest concept, Sugar Shack, in Brookhaven last year. In addition to gourmet sandwiches and coffees, they offer more than two dozen varieties of cupcakes. There are neighborhood shops around town as well such as Carolyn's Cupcakes in Oak Grove.
Nashville-based Gigi's Cupcakes now has five locations in Georgia; Athens, Buckhead, East Cobb, Sandy Springs and Savannah and a sixth location open in later this month at the Forum in Norcross. The aforementioned Jacksonville Florida-based Cami Cakes has two locations in Florida in addition to their Atlanta location on Peachtree (a former Planet Smoothie) near Justin's Restaurant. Los Angeles-based Sprinkles, thought of by many as the originator of the cupcake craze, has yet to open a location in Atlanta. I had the pleasure of visiting their Chicago location last month and was amazed by their operation. They have devoted fans, a great product, and are able to command a whopping $3.50 per cupcake. Sprinkles does allow consumers to vote for where they'd like a Sprinkles opened next, and for what it’s worth, Atlanta is apparently in the thick of it just behind Boston.

These are the best cupcakes I've had!
Chocolate Pink had the best cupcakes in town, unfortunately they're no longer.
Atlanta Cupcake Factory is my second favorite.
I am sad to hear that Sweet Pockets closed. The owner, Lennie King, was so nice. That being said, just like yogurt and burger places, there are probably way too many cupcake shops in Atlanta too!
Sweet Pockets was the BEST! Lennie moved to Texas and was trying to get someone else to take over the cupcake store. I am not a huge CamiCakes fans. Sweet Pockets had some of the best tasting cupcakes and most original flavors, they are certainly missed!
