Calling All Maxxinistas to Midtown

Next year T.J. Maxx will open an additional intown store in Coro's Midtown Place Shopping Center in what had been a Borders Bookstore, then had been operating on a short term basis as Spirit Halloween. I'm told that at one point, Whole Foods was at least somewhat interested in expanding their existing store into a portion of the Border's, but their expansion would have prevented the T.J. from opening. In the end, while this Whole Foods (originally built to be a Harris Teeter) is one of the best performing in Atlanta, they will maintain their current footprint.

Currently there is a dearth of retail in the vicinity, especially clothing, with the center's other tenants being The Home Depot, Petsmart, Staples, Verizon Wireless and assorted eateries.

This will all change, of course, in 2013, when Jamestown's Ponce City Market opens and is expected to include a variety of national and local retailers in addition to restaurants and offices.

Presently, T.J.'s nearest location is on Howell Mill Road in The District at Howell Mill. Depending on what route you take, the distance between the two stores is as little as 5 miles.

Are you a Maxxinista deprived of deals intown and eager for this store to open? Would you have preferred an expanded Whole Foods? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Good to see the space filled but it doesn't excite me. Would have been more excited about an expanded Whole Foods.

There has been an increasing amount of class-less customers at the Ponce Whole Foods. (Talking on cell phones, eating from/being unsanitary at the hot bar.) TJMaxx won't help.

TJ Maxx is just awful. Is that the best they could do? C'mon, it's Peachtree St and they're putting trash like this in there. How about a Kohl's at least if they're thinking a clothing store. Think bigger. When I see TJ Maxx, I think 'ghetto'.

actually last anon poster.... its on Ponce not peachtree....and TJMaxx is actually better than a kohl's.... Kohl's is a glorified JCP....

Ghetto? Have you people even been to the TJMaxx in that shopping center off Lenox? I went there looking for a cheap bag and everything I liked was $100 and up! The company is clearly capable of keeping up inventories of higher end stuff, and seriously yeah...at least it's not a Ross...there's the lowest of low no matter where it is.

Kohl's stores are 90k SF and up. This space would not be close to big enough. Now the Dillard's in Atlantic Station.... that could be a Kohl's someday.

TJ Maxx has improved greatly. As prior poster said, their Buckhead Loop store and I'll also add in the Perimeter store, are great.

@ SB,

I agree, this space is clearly too small for a Kohl's but yea, the Dillard's in Atlantic Station, now that's a Kohl's space!

While I doubt this new midtown store will feature the "Runway as Maxx," with a large selection of designer duds for women, it should be an upgrade from my nearby Northlake store.

For the record, Howell Mill used to a "Runway" store but has since been downgraded to still include some higher end merch, but not as much as before. As it stands now, East Cobb, Buckhead and Perimeter are the only local stores to feature "the Runway."

Thanks as always for the comments and for reading the blog.

What a disaster.

I am glad we are getting a TJs. We have limited shopping choices in the Intown neighborhoods other than little specialty boutiques. I can't wait!
