Scoreboards Hatches From The Nest

The Nest on Clairmont Road has closed and has renamed itself Scoreboards Bar & Grill.

Nest opened last spring, replacing a long list of failed clubs / lounges / eateries in that space.  The Nest was opened by a group of recent Emory grads, and their plan seems to have been to appeal to Emory students. I named the business to my DeathWatch  shortly after its opening and predicted they would close within a year or so.

With Emory back in session a few weeks now, the owners opted to dump the Nest branding and go with the more generic sports bar'y "Scoreboards," likely in an attempt to appeal to a greater portion of the neighborhood.

Scoreboards seems like your typical sports bar, but according to the banner (pictured) it also offers event planning?  I'm not sure I want a sports bar run by a recent grad planning my event, but that's just me.

Personally, I don't think this venture will really do any better than the last, given that the ownership, management and menu remains largely unchanged.  I recently discovered 7 Hens, a new fast casual restaurant specializing in schnitzel.  It's located in the adjacent North Decatur shopping center, having replaced the long standing Philly Connection, and it definitely shows more promise than a generic reincarnation of a sports bar.

Yet another Scoutmob-featured closure... I'm starting to see a trend.

I swear that space is cursed. At least three restaurants have opened and closed there in the last few years. Bojanic, Community Q and, to a lesser extent Capozzis have done well in that plaza.

I am still not sure what is keeping Pyng Ho alive. They are like those Radio Shacks you see in the malls -never anyone in there but still somehow in business.

They have a great covered patio- if they would just put TV's out there then I think they would get a ton of business during college football season. The nest never could really figure out what they wanted to be- they were a college bar with $12 hamburgers.

We went there after dinner on Saturday to try to catch some of the UGA-Mizzou game.

We walked in and no one greeted us. For a sports bar they had an odd choice of bad pop music at a very loud volume. We asked them to turn this music down, and they did for about 15 minutes.

They were out of all but 2 types of beer. The waitstaff was clueless when my friend asked for an Amstel light. They said they were only having a soft opening so they didn't have much inventory. LAme excuse.

In addition, it took 5 people 15 minutes to try to get the credit card machine to work...I predict a quick demise of this one and won't be back. Watching a game there was an awful experience and we caught half of one quarter and left.

Regarding Pyng Ho: We eat there often and can tell you they do a TON of take-out business.

Regarding 7 Hens: Despite the somewhat strange concept- international variations on schnitzel- it was good when we tried it. Looks like they're trying to position themselves to be franchised. Their branding and in-store displays, etc are just a little too chain-y looking for Decatur.

I was shocked to see Isaac the bartender taking photos of the place on Saturday night although the flash from his camera was about the only exciting event going on in the place. Bad music, horrible selection, sub par service (even though the people did seem nice) and poorly planned Sat evening means you should shut the place down and relaunch when you have your act together.

re: Pyng Ho. no one actually eats in a Chinese restaurant anymore except for Christmas Eve (it was packed!) and Chinese New Year. it's all delivery and takeout. their food, especially the Chinese menu is a cut above all the other Chinese places in the area.

Whoever said this place was cursed, you are indeed correct. The bouncer of the club told my friend 21 year old senior friend that he was not able to enter the establishment, but not after she took the guy's money. This place is out to take student's money without providing the experience, clearly something is wrong in the management of this place...
