Two Local Restaurants and a Custard Closure Too

Canton, Georgia-based Chepe's Mexican Grill closed their Marietta location on Johnson Ferry Road about a week ago.  The first Chepe's opened in Cumming in 2008, and the restaurant subsequently opened more.  Current locations include Cumming, Suwanee, Johns Creek and another Marietta location on Shallowford Road.  According to management, the Johnson Ferry was closed to to overall under-performance

Norcross, Georgia-based Saigon Cafe closed their south Buckhead location across from Piedmont Hospital last week.  The restaurant opened early last year in the space that once housed the flagship location of the failed Mama Fu's franchise.  Founder David Lee opened the first Saigon Cafe in early 2002 and has slowly expanded his restaurant concept.  Today Lee operates seven locations of Saigon Cafe and one   restaurant branded Saigon Basil, on Piedmont Avenue in midtown.  All of Lee's restaurant serve pho and other traditional Vietnamese & Thai cuisine.

Stilwell, Kansas-based Sheridan's Lattes & Frozen Custard closed its lone Atlanta area location.  The custard franchise was located in a retrofitted former Donatos Pizza in Cofer Crossing in Tucker.  If memory serves, the shop has been open for ten years, opening shortly after Donatos exited the Atlanta market in 2002.  Not far away on Lawrenceville Highway,  Rita's, another custard franchise, closed a shop a while back as well.  Back at Cofer Crossing, Papi's Cuban & Caribbean Grill is preparing to open its fifth area location later this month.

I live squarely inbetween the Cumming, Suwanee and JC locations of Chepe's. It is horrendously bad Mexican food. I've never understood why they are popular.

Wouldn't be surprised to see the Saigon Cafe on Windward close. Poor reviews, service and a declining lunch crowd.

No clue how Saigon Cafe did so poorly. Granted when I went, it was never totally packed, but I was never the only diner in there. Maybe the space was too large or location to expensive to make ends meet. I know first hand from friends that work across the street at Piedmont Hospital, who obviously can't leave for lunch, there were multiple large orders daily for the nurses and doctors.

I really like Sheridan's - so much so that every once in a while we'd drive all the way from Buckhead out to Tucker for it. Way too long of a drive though, and I would guess they'd have done much better ITP or in a Dunwoody type area.

I agree. Considering how hot Atlanta is, there should be way more custard or ice cream places, whether ITP or OTP. I am so done with frozen yogurt. Way too many of those places and they all taste the same.

Wow, I'm shocked to hear about Sheridan's. Their custard is/was excellent. The Rita's was right across the street and did a Boardwalk type opening-closing-reopening-closing for good.

In terms of just custard, the Sheridans was creamier and better than that of Rita's.

That is really too bad about Sheridan's! I loved that place. And I remember when it was Donato's too!

Went to the Chepe's in JC exactly once, and that's going to be it. Bad food, confusing service, and our clothes smelled like grease the rest of the day. There are too many good Mex places to have to deal with that.

Yea right- too many "good" Mexican restaurants. You must have no taste buds. The area is full of mediocre, carbon copy Mexican places which serve food that has no personality. Chepes, the one near us, was clean, staffed with friendly people, and has food that, although was more tex mex, was at the top of the game. The restaurant had its own personality. The one time we has a substandard meal I have a wonderful talk with the manager who thanked me for bringing it to his attention and comped my entire meal. Try that at the standard Mexican restaurant.
