Marshalls Leaving Marshalls Plaza for New Shopportunity

Marshalls is leaving Marshalls Plaza to open in The Exchange at Hammond.

Marshalls will leave their namesake center and move about a mile south to The Exchange at Hammond. (Both centers are operated by Atlanta-based  Mimms Enterprises.)  Rumor has it Mimms is looking at going vertical in place of Marshalls and may consider using their space for apartments or condos.

The current  Marshalls store is quite old and outdated in many ways including, but not limited to, its carts, store design and size.  The store opened in 1980 and has received minimal renovations, possible a result of Marshalls plans to close or relocate the store.

No official date for the closure and reopening but I'd expect both to happen before year end.

I noticed on a recent visit that the store was actively using three different generations of shopping carts, none of which were the current models.

Marshalls will open in place of a shuttered ROSS Dress For Less at the center anchored by Whole Foods Market and Office Depot.  ROSS Dress For Less closed this past January before which Yoforia had also closed in the center in December. (The former Yoforia later reopened as another froyo joint.)   The center is also home to Petco, Dollar Tree and Hearth Pizza Tavern, among others.

Marshalls is owned by Framingham, Massachusetts-based TJX Companies.  TJX is the parent company of domestic off-price retailers such as T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods as well as a handful of similar retailers abroad.  TJX has a history of relocating older stores to better, newer real estate when possible.

Last month the company relocated a HomeGoods store in Kennesaw to Town Center Plaza, and in doing so joined sister brands Marshalls and T.J. Maxx.  In 2011, Marshalls "relocated" what I believe to have been one of their first, if not their very first. metro Atlanta store from Plaza Fiesta to TOWN Brookhaven.   Marshalls opened in Plaza Fiesta, then known as Buford-Clairmont Mall, in 1978, and though the store closed, the "relocated" Brookhaven store adopted their opening date as its own and displays it to shoppers.

Are you a fan of Marshalls "shopportunities?"  Do you think this move makes sense?  Do you think a adding a residential component to Marshalls Plaza would be a good idea?

I went there last week for the first time, this sure explains why it was so terrible. That also seems like an incredibly stupid place to put in apartments. If you are trying to turn left either from the road or from a shopping center, it's absolute madness. I now go into CVS from Sandy Springs Circle bc of how many times someone coming southbound wanting to turn into Marshalls would nearly hit me or completely block my view. Even down by Hammond I've never had that problem and both those shopping centers are far more happening spots.

Good call! I have had those same traffic problems as well. The Exchange at Hammond is logistically superior and offers a newer location so really a win / win in those terms.

Thanks for reading the site and for the comments.

Condos or apartments right there? Haha, those would be some sweet views of the Flashers strip club just a block down and the closed and torn down empty old Inserection and La Paz parking lots. Terrible idea. Definitely agree that the new Hammond location is superior. I would have liked to see it go in by Hinton's Wine in the shopping center at Abernathy and Roswell Rd where LA Fitness and Moondog Growlers have opened. That center is trying to make a comeback and could possibly do it with one or two more big tenants but I guess Hammond is better.

4th dead/dying center on Roswell rd in SS! Maybe the city government should use this land for their City Hall and use the former HarrisTeeter/Target property for a city park. Apartments/Offices/Condo's would be better suited for the center that Big Lots is in. Take that land and the adjoining former Tom Jumper space and convert to a Mixed Use property with mostly condo's and Apartments and some retail/restaurants. Actually a park would be great here, but the land is to valuable.

New intel suggests that the current store will close and the new store will open within a few weeks with both happening in October.

I can't imagine SS approving any new apartments. Maybe I'm wrong.

The Ross that closed "moved" to Buford Highway, right? Is that open?

@Anon RE: Buford Highway,

I don't know that they officially called that a "relocation" but no, it's not yet open. I hear they plan to open before the end of the year...

I heard a 60 story office building was in the works for this site. I know it sounds weird, but this came from a very reputable source in the development community.

Hey A99, love your blog.

I read somewhere in the comments that business can apply for a free EV, electric vehicle station. Can you please tell me where I can find that post and contact info.

Hi Anon RE: EV,

I'm honestly not sure. I saw the stations at Suburban Plaza and a reader commented they could have been applied for at no charge but I think that program has since ended.

Thanks for the comments and for reading the site.
