South Buckhead Sushi Joint Sinks After Six Years

Bluefin has closed in South Buckhead.

Bluefin, located at 1829 Peachtree Road at Palisades Road, abruptly closed last week.  I'm not sure of the exact day but the restaurant's facebook was last updated November 18th before the following closure announcement was left late Saturday night.

"Thank you all the customers for your great business for 6 years. On behalf of all the staff at Bluefin Atlanta, we want to thank you and apologize for sudden closure. We hope to find another opportunity to return to you soon and happy holidays for everyone!"

I tried reaching the restaurant (by phone) Friday afternoon to no avail and gather that the restaurant closed the day before Thanksgiving.  Bluefin's Facebook remains up and available while their phone and website were down as of Friday afternoon.

Billed as a sushi bar, restaurant and lounge, Bluefin never seemed especially crowded and I am amazed it lasted as long as it did.  Bluefin was located within the same strip as Beehive Co-Op, Cafe Intermezzo, Standard and a couple of other small shops.  Beehive Co-Op, Bluefin's closest neighbor, relocated to the Edgewood Retail District in 2010, while Standard eventually closed in the center in favor of their more visible and accessible location within Lenox Square.  Earlier this year, Cafe Intermezzo, a south Buckhead mainstay since 1987, relocated to a shiny new location in midtown.

The former Cafe Intermezzo will soon reopen as Cafe Moulin Rouge, while many of the the other spaces in the center remain either vacant or leased to seemingly fleeting tenants.  The center seems primed for redevelopment IMHO.

Nearby, Curbed reported that there is a plan to redevelop the current Peachtree Cleaners & Laundry, Peachtree Road Package Store, former Harry's in a Hurry and current Chick-fil-A in a 200,000 square foot and seemingly 8+ story medical office building.  The project is being developed by Cornerstone and thus far, the developer is reportedly "playing nice" with neighbors in nearby Brookwood Hills.  A rezoning application is expected to be heard later this month.  It's worth noting that current renderings show a "reconfigured" Chick-fil-A.

Earlier this year, work was completed on the first phase of a medical office project that replaced a shuttered T.G.I. Friday's restaurant just north of where Cornerstone intends to build.  The first phase, a 50,000 square foot four story building, is anchored by Georgia, Hand, Shoulder & Elbow.   The second phase would add another 90,000 square feet.  The project is also home to new branch of Atlanta-based Fidelity Bank.

Bluefin was a bust because it was the wrong type of restaurant in that space. Prior to Bluefin, it was a decent Asian place, and before that, it was a great Italian restaurant, Portofino. That area needs a fast, casual Chinese restaurant with takeout, a great sandwich/salad shop, and a meat and three type of place (which the area has missed since the great "Gregory's" closed a few years back.

Can you really claim that it closed abruptly when other news outlets (ajc and creative loafing) had confirmation that the guys behind Octopus Bar were taking over the space and opening a restaurant there over 2 weeks ago? The Loafing article stated they planned getting the space in mid-December and were opening for a March opening.

The wrong kind of restaurant? You mean a sushi spot, with decent sushi, in an area book-ended by high-end residential? And the places that were there (and folded) before it were the right places? So the appropriate solution is to give the people that own expensive homes in Collier Hills, Brookwood, etc. a cheap chinese take-out place? Go back to Dothan.
