Brighten Park Bags a Burger Joint

The former Lettuce Souprise You that will soon be the new home of Grub Burger Bar
Grub Burger signs on to open at Brighten Park.

College Station, Texas-based Grub Burger Bar is adding a second Atlanta location.  The new Grub will open at Brighten Park, fka Loehmann's Plaza, near the corner of Briarcliff and North Druid Hills Roads.  This deal has been in the works for months and became final this week.

The new Grub will replace longtime tenant Lettuce Souprise You which closed July 31st.

Lettuce Souprise You was started by entrepreneur David Dubrof in 1987 and once had a number of locations around metro Atlanta. Lettuce Souprise is very similar to Sweet Tomatoes.  In some cases, the lunch and dinner-centric eatery partnered with Caribou Coffee which did the bulk of its business in the morning.  The partnership eventually failed, and did the concept, after changes in ownership and management.  (The former Lettuce Souprise You at Cumberland Mall is today a Jason's Deli while the former co-branded location in south Buckhead is home to El Azteca.)

The Loehmann's Plaza/Brighten Park location marked the chain's last remaining metro location.  Interestingly, although I have reason to believe LSY had not been doing well, a message posted to their facebook page indicates they are looking at reopening, somewhere, sometime in the future.

Grub Burger Bar's main menu offers a variety of certified Angus beef burgers as well as "burgers that don't moo" like salmon, chickpea, turkey and chicken burgers.  Grub also offers a variety of salads, sides, and shakes of both the typical and boozy varieties.  One offering that Grub touts that differentiates them from other gourmet burger joints is that they bake their buns from scratch every hour.

Most Grub burgers are 7 ounces and basically no burger costs more than eight bucks.

The 4,000 square foot Lettuce Souprise You space will receive a complete renovation and should open in February, according to Grub market partner Curt Steinlage.  According to Steinlage, Brighten Park's new anchor The Fresh Market should open in April or May.  Zoës Kitchen opened in the center earlier this year, replacing what had formerly been a liquor store.

Atlanta's first Grub at Akers Mill
The first Atlanta area Grub opened in Akers Mill shopping center this past April.  Sources say at least two additional Grub locations are in the works for OTP markets.

I'm really sad about Lettuce Souprise You closing. Sweet Tomatoes is too far away, too expensive and not as good. Know of any other salad bar type restaurants in Atlanta???

@Anon,

IMHO, Lettuce Souprise You had not been good in years. Sweet Tomatoes while more expensive, runs coupons all the time and is good for what it is. I'm unaware of any other similar / convenient options.

Thanks for your comments and readership.

I agree - Sweet Tomatoes is much better and LSY has gone down hill over the past few years. Was really hoping a Sweet Tomatoes would take it over. We really don't need yet another burger joint......

Agree with you on LSY, the last time I ate there, I found a huge hair on my sandwich... It always seemed kind of dirty. Just my opinion...

I work across from the Aker's Mill Grub Burger and not only is it packed at lunch, the burgers are excellent.

Although I am over the burger craze I believe a burger joint will do well in this area as right now it is populated with the large fast food chains. Should do well here if they have a good product.

Reminds me a little of what happened in L5P, when a healthy restaurant Eat Your Vegetables was replaced by a burger joint, The Vortex.

I stopped by Saturday and sadly saw the sign that it was closed and "Opening soon in a new location" I never found the food exceptional but I did like it for what it is in that particular part of town. Zoey had a line out the door and has slow service in general I ended up crossing the street to try out the new Willys instead.

Those seem like decent prices considering the issue with beef prices lately.

Certainly better than the Vortex which has seemed to have lost it's collective mind and charges $10.50-$12 for a 1/2 pounder.

Loehmann's plaza has become a total suburban haven ITP, as boring as Brookhaven. At least it should distract the tasteless from the things that actually make the Druid Hills area unique.
