Bits & Bites

Dick's Sporting Goods is making headway in transforming the former Kmart in East Cobb.  The sporting goods retailer will occupy a large portion of the shuttered discount store and is slated to open this coming spring.  The next closest Dick's is in Kennesaw on Ernest Barrett Parkway.

Following this past Sunday's opening of Warby Parker and yesterday's HUGE opening of Shake Shack, a number of new tenants are slated to open in Buckhead Atlanta in the coming days. Scoop NYC, a clothing retailer, is scheduled to open today with Thirteen Pies, a pizza restaurant, scheduled to open October 7th.  Gypsy Kitchen is slated to open October 14th.  Corso CoffeeL’Occitane, Helmut Lang and diptique will likely open in the coming days. Le Bilboquet, a New York-based eatery, is reportedly planning to open at the end of October. In speaking with a number of people involved with assorted tenants in the project, permitting and inspections seemed to be the most common reasons for delayed openings.

Morningside Women's boutique Meringue is closing after six years in business.  Meringue is located on North Highland Avenue across the street from Alon's.  For the next "six to eight weeks" Meringue will sell its existing inventory (except for consignment jewelry) at 25-60% off.

Cook-Out is officially coming to Carrollton.  The North Carolina-based burger chain has finalized its plans to construct a new restaurant on South Park Street in place of the vacant Dixie Country Buffet.  The parcel sits adjacent to an existing Burger King. Plans call for the new Cook-Out to open early next year.

World of Beer plans to open its midtown location on Peachtree Street at Viewpoint Monday, October 13th.  A Kennesaw location on Chastain Road should follow in early November.

Sweet Talk Bakery & Cafe, which opened in Duluth in July, has reportedly been ordered by a U.S. District Court to change its name by October 13, 2014.  Existing business Sweet Hut has been in operation on Buford Highway in Chamblee for years and will soon open new locations in Midtown, Norcross and Duluth, across the street from Sweet Talk.

A long delayed Walmart Neighborhood Market in Olde Mill shopping center in East Cobb is slated to open October 15th. The store has been in the works for nearly two years and replaces what was a shuttered Winn-Dixie.  Just 4 Fitness had been occupying a portion of the former grocery space and was relocated to another space in the center to make room for the Walmart.  Strangely, Just 4 Fitness operating hours remained posted on the glass of Walmart's store as of this past weekend. The new Walmart will be open 24 hours a day.

The former Chow Bing at the Pencil Factory Lofts on Decatur Street will soon reopen as Bento Hut

Bojangles' opened its newest Atlanta area location earlier this morning on Stone Mountain Highway in Snellville. Future Georgia openings are planned for Commerce and Lilburn in December.

The Real Chow Baby at Mall of Georgia has been closed for a few weeks and will reportedly reopen this coming Monday, October 6th.  The restaurant is reportedly under new ownership and management.

EZ One Price Dry Cleaners plans to open their new Sandy Springs location on Roswell Road, Monday October 6th. Currently the company has one area location, also on Roswell Road, but in North Buckhead.

Drive by that Dick's site everyday and have been amazed by the work going into what looked like a simple upfit and repurposing. Nope. This has been a complete rebuild. Don't know if that was the plan for the start, but given the expense someone is looking to make a lot of money from the finished product. As for the Wal-Mart in Olde Mill, very weird, challenged space. Very much a niche to be filled, but may or may not work out.

The work is progressing quite fast and the new Dick's should open soon.

The TCBY Store is now gone. Torn down and there is evidence that a new building is going up. Will miss TCBY but they did not keep up with the times. Noise level in the store from all of the cooler refrigeration systems was high.

Also noted across the street is the 'For Sale' sign in front of Chuck E Cheese. The sign says that the property has been sold-

Glad that the new Wal-Mart at Olde Mill is open. It should take some business from the other food stores in the area.
