Mellow Mushroom Taking Over Restaurant Relic in College Park

Local pizza shop to open new location in College Park

Atlanta-based Mellow Mushroom plans to open a new restaurant in the former Steak & Ale building at 1477 Virginia Avenue in College Park.  The building is actively being stripped and renovated to give it the "Mellow Mushroom treatment."

Steak & Ale, once a popular American restaurant with nearly 300 locations nationwide, had a number of locations in metro Atlanta.  Notably, one was on Andrew Young International Boulevard in downtown Atlanta and is now home to both Truva and Cuts.  Another Steak & Ale was at the corner of LaVista Road and Northlake Parkway in Tucker and while it has been closed for nearly a decade, remains in place with signage still visible.  The chain, which has been gone since 2008, will reportedly be relaunched in Texas later this year.

Bart Baker is listed as the owner/partner of the franchised Mellow Mushroom location.  Current projections call for the new Mellow Mushroom to open in mid October.

About a mile from the upcoming Mellow Mushroom,  entrepreneur John Gianoulidis recently opened "Kafenio." The Greek eatery is located on Main Street and is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch.

Mellow Mushroom opened its first location at Spring and 14th Streets in downtown Atlanta in 1974. Today, Mellow Mushroom has over 150 locations in nearly 20 states, with over 40 locations in Georgia.

Are you excited to have a Mellow Mushroom coming to College Park?  Are you a Woodward Academy grad who would have loved to have had options like Kafenio and Mellow Mushroom when you were in school?  What else would be a good fit for the area?

Please share your thoughts below.
