Bits & Bites

Rise Pies will celebrate the grand opening of its new location within Lenox Square's Fashion Cafe tomorrow.  The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and features a menu centered on personal pizzas priced from about $5.50 to about ten bucks.  The Youngstown, Ohio-based restaurant has five locations open with about a half dozen more in the pipeline. A second Georgia location is scheduled to open in July in the new Tanger Outlets in Pooler, near Savannah.

The IHOP on Clairmont Road near Briarcliff Road is currently undergoing an extensive renovation.  Among other changes, the restaurant has adopted the new "smile" IHOP logo on its exterior signage.  The restaurant's parking lot was also completely repaved.  I ran into Julia Stewart, CEO of DineEquity, IHOP's parent company. I mentioned to her that I'd noticed and liked the active remodel happening at the "A-frame" on Clairmont... and how it has the new "smile" logo... she said that I'd made her day. Suffice it to say I put an IHOP smile on her face.

Athens-based Barberitos Southwestern Grille & Cantina opened its newest location this past Monday.   Located at 2960 Shallowford Road in Marietta, the restaurant is the 28th in location in Georgia for the growing chain.

Mrs. Winner's has reopened its East Point location at 2430 McAlpine Terrace, near Greenbriar Mall. The restaurant officially reopened this past Monday.  The restaurant had been closed since about 2010.  Currently based in Minnesota, the chain dates to 1979.  By the mid 1980s, Mrs. Winner's had grown to include nearly 200 locations.  After a number of missteps and ownership changes, the company has shrunk to just twelve locations between Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. With their most recent bankruptcy behind them, ownership has pledged to again grow the brand.

A new Bojangles' is coming to Cumming.  The new 3,800 square foot freestanding restaurant will be built near the intersection of Keith Bridge and Browns Bridge Roads.

True Food Kitchen now takes online reservations via OpenTable. The Phoenix, Arizona-based chain has one location in Atlanta at Lenox Square, eleven others open and seven new stores in the pipeline.

Red Phone Booth and Amalfi Pizzeria will be opening later this summer on Andrew Young International Boulevard in downtown Atlanta.  The two businesses replace Dailey's, an Atlanta institution, which closed in mid 2009.  The businesses are being opened Stephen de Haan, who was previously President of Andrews Entertainment District in Buckhead. Red Phone Booth, a 4,000 square foot cigar lounge, is expected to open in June on the ground floor. Amalfi Pizza, an 8,000 square foot "traditional Neapolitan trattoria," is expected to open in August on the upper level.

Huff Harrington will be relocating their home store from 102 West Paces Ferry Road near Flywheel and Drybar to Buckhead Court at 3850 Roswell Road.  Huff Harrington will occupy a soon to be created 5,000 square foot space.   The 1,400 square foot North Buckhead Vacuum & Allergy Center and the the 3,600 square foot former salon space in the courtyard will be combined into a single 5,000 square foot space for Huff Harrington which plans to reopen in the fall. (North Buckhead Vacuum will vacate the space in May and has yet to announce if or where they may relocate.) The Huff Harrington lease brings the center to 100% leased. Other new additions to the center include dtox juice,  Range Boutique and Superica from Chef Ford Fry, which is expected to open later this summer in the former Outback Steakhouse

Kiehl's celebrated the reopening and relocation of their store at Lenox Square yesterday.  The skincare retailer now occupies a space on the main mall level between Guess and 7 For All Mankind, across from Bloomingdale's.

Dänkbaar Taco, which opened in late February in place of Bad Dog Taqueria in Emory Village, has closed. The casual Asian/Southern/Mexican fusion concept never really caught on.  Its closure is sad, but not surprising.

Establishment officially reopens tonight at Colony Square in midtown.  The popular speakeasy which relocated from Buckhead to Midtown had delayed its official opening a few weeks so that a grand staircase could be installed, allowing for easier access to the business.  Establishment is open Monday - Saturday 4:30PM until 3AM and is closed on Sunday.

If Mrs. Winners wants to expand in Atlanta, there's not too many of their former locations that haven't either been torn down or renovated into another restaurant (Cook Out being a major example of this.) or other businesses. Bojangles has really filled the void left by Mrs. Winners (although nobody does a steak biscuit as good as Mrs. Winners does).
