C-Store Expansion in Progress at Lindbergh

Existing convenience store to expand.

The BP convenience store and gas station at 2320 Cheshire Bridge Road in Atlanta is in the midst of an extensive renovation and expansion.  The business is currently closed as it undergoes a complete reboot.  According to permits on file with the City of Atlanta, plans call for a "rear addition to an existing store to include walk-in cooler, new tile, counter, sheetrock, HVAC, elec, ceiling and paint."  The permit, which was issued late last year, is labeled "C-Store Expansion."

Records indicate that the convenience store was originally built in 1962 with the adjacent car wash added in 1983. Interestingly, the "commercial addition" permit lists "GULF OIL CORP" as the property's owner.  The permit suggests the current C-store is 1,800 square feet and that the addition, which will reportedly cost $162,000, will add another 760 square feet.

This kind of update and renovation will surely make the business more appealing to local residents.  I was unable to obtain a definitive timeline for the completion of the work, but I feel comfortable saying it should be completed by late summer.

As ToNeTo Atlanta readers may recall, the C-store/gas station, former Varsity Jr. property, and a number of other adjacent properties were at one point going to be part of a larger land assemblage and redevelopment.  Those plans failed to materialize and instead the community is getting a much needed self storage facility in place of the former beloved Varsity Jr.

What products matter most to you when visiting a convenience store?  Are you pleased to see this store renovated versus torn down and rebuilt? Were you, like me, just getting used to (and loving)  gas below two bucks again?

Please share your thoughts below.

I went by the old Varsity Junior a few weeks ago and the construction and signage don't seem to be a self storage facility. The sign references street level retail.

I think the area could become another dense hub. I'd personally like to see more housing options (townhomes/apartment/condo) in the area. There's plenty to walk to as-is.

We do NOT need more townhomes/apartments/condos in the neighborhood. Of course, we don't need self-storage either. Next idea? How about a dessert place....?
