Kroger recently confirmed that it plans to close at least two local stores next month. The stores are located in DeKalb and Fulton counties and will not immediately be replaced by other stores.
Inside the Kroger at Northridge shopping center |
The Stone Mountain store is located near the intersection of N. Hairston Road and Memorial Drive. It opened in 1989 as a Big Star and later was an A&P from 1993-1999. The current Kroger is just shy of 53,000 square feet and features a 14 pump fuel center. The fuel center was added in the last ten years. While I don't have exact figures, it surely represents a significant capital expense. Additionally, the store has received a number of renovations, the most recent of which occurred in the past five years, according to local sources. A release from Kroger's Tucker-based regional offices indicates that the store had been in business nearly 18 years and is due to close October 13.
The Sandy Springs store is located near the intersection of Roswell Road and Northridge Parkway and is just under 42,000 square feet. Local sources indicate that Kroger had previously sought to expand the small, more than 35 year old store within the center, but had decided to close it after being unable to reach an agreement on the expansion. The Northridge Kroger has not received an update in many years, and is one of few stores in the market so dated. The store is expected to close October 25.
Kroger Atlanta's Corporate Affairs Manager Felix B. Turner said in separate statements that the stores “experienced declining sales and negative profit over an extended period of time.”
Kroger says it “remains committed to the Atlanta area”
All 138 associates of the Stone Mountain store and 89 associates of the Sandy Springs store will be considered for reassignment to other Kroger locations, according to the release.
The nearest remaining Kroger in Stone Mountain is located on South Hairston Road, 3.5 miles away. The nearest remaining Kroger to the Sandy Springs store is about 3.8 miles away on Dunwoody Club Drive.
This past May, Kroger closed its store at Mountain View Village shopping center on US 78 in Snellville. The approximately 59,000 square foot store opened in 1987 and had been renovated a number of times and also saw the addition of a Kroger Fuel Center years ago. Kroger said that the decision to close the store was due to "declining sales."
Site work is currently underway for a new large format Kroger store at Northside Drive and 17th Street behind IKEA while plans for a number of other stores are "being re-examined."
Are you surprised that Kroger has decided to close additional stores? Where do you do most of your shopping? Do you drive out of your way to patronize a specific grocer?

No, because the Embry Hills store was supposed to closed for renovations back sometime this past summer. Those plans have been put on hold for various reasons. There used to be the old S&S Cafeteria and the Motel 6 located on this vast property to make room for the expanded new Kroger, Those building are in the process of being torn down. There used to be a large package store on this property, but like the motel, it too has been torn down.
Now, its a wait and see attitude as to what is going to happen with Kroger.
The Kroger on Memorial and South Hairston was in a very dangerous area with crimes occurring on daily basis. The closing of this store is long over due.
Stone Mountain is a food desert area. I have friends who bought houses in a decent neighborhoods out there, but there are no decent grocery stores or other shopping for miles and miles and Kroger pulling out doesn't help the situation. Wouldn't be for me.
Since Sandy Springs turned down Lidl elsewhere on Roswell Road maybe it can go in to replace this closing Kroger. I visited the location in Greenville, SC and these are great stores, much nicer than ALDI.
LOL what is dangerous about this area? There is a brand new Wal-Mart across the street from this Kroger. I have visited this Kroger many times in the last 18 years, only issue with this place is its size and building age. Wal-mart across the street probably doesnt help either taking away sales.
The Kroger in South Mountain is not dangerous.
Kroger president commons Snellville is getting a complete remodel but they are so busy all the time
I live in Belvedere Park just behind the Belvedere Plaza Kroger but I prefer to drive to a East Lake Publix. I wish they'd update the Belvedere Kroger as well as the shopping center itself. Seems like redevelopment is happening everywhere but that shopping center,
I agree with 3 and 4. I stopped there on occasion since it first opened and Stone Mountain since I was was a kid and I'm now in my 40s. I've never felt threatened going there. If crime happened as frequently as you said it does ,that Kroger would have shut down years ago. I'm also not buying into the North Hairston " declining sales and profit" mantra. The foot tragic looked the same as it did when it first opened. I just cannot see the people in the community stop going to a needed store.
Rob ATL,
I don't get it myself. A couple of years back..the Belvedere store was getting " remodeled " but as you have seen it seemed otherwise. I must concur with you with your post. The Kroger on Wesley Chapel Road is also in need of change and the residents living there have complained about the store being
" too old " and " too small" in which it is. I don't know how true this is but it was said that they want to remodel/ recreate Kroger but the former Kmart that was next door to it got in their way(????) As much as I would like to buy that reason,I'm not as the Kroger on Flat Shoals Pkwy has been remodeled.
"Declining Sales" at the Kroger on US 78 Snellville was in reality "High Theft". Same can most likely be said for these other Kroger stores that are closing.
RobATL, the Belvedere Plaza Kroger was actually remodeled in the past couple of years. We moved here 3 1/2yrs ago and was right after we moved in they remodeled it, about the same time Toco Hills and Northlake were done, since that's where we moved from. I've heard they're talking about remodeling the entire complex, but we'll have to wait and see.
The foot tragic looked the same as it did when it first opened ...
... foot traffic does not = sales
There apparently was a recent viral video of a crazed person rolling around ON the produce section in one of these stores. SMH
Here's the story about the Stone Mtn Kroger produce bather:

I'm not surprised at all if more Krogers close up. Many of them need to be renivated. There are other chain of stores that need to be renivated also. I have walked into Krogers and other stores and have turned around and walked out and drive miles to another store. Just because of the cleansiness of the store. Kroger's if pretty reasonable with their prices and always have some good sales. You have to keep your store up to par, to keep customers coming back. I don't think you want to do in a dirty store.
Near future FEMA camps
Kroger is below standard- FEMA prefers Walmart.
Northridge Kroger aka GHETTO KROGER should have closed years ago! As a current Kroger employee that had transferred from there after 3 years so grateful to now be at a Kroger that the company cares about and maintains regularly! Northridge Kroger was tiny very neglected dirty and part of a really questionable shopping center! That part of Sandy Springs is crime infested and pardon my French just super sketchy! The decline of the Northern part of Sandy Springs Continues to worsen day by day you’re by year that area desperately needs a facelift
Kroger's have become a walk in hell. The Kroger in Roswell became a run down hole in the wall when they hired new management and put in the retards. I've been a customer since my teenage years and now that I'm 57 years old and all I can say is that's it's been a rollercoaster ride to hell. With all those new people working it brought the whole establishment down. Bring back the old management so us old people can be respected and loved again
Northridge Kroger moving out is just the obvious. I'm a native of this area and it has gone to hell. I'm furious. I will not go to any of the stores. I will drive to Roswell, Doraville, etc. to buy groceries and things. The gas stations are full of flat out low life thug trash including the employees. The management and/or corporate franchisers neglect those stores (Wendy's, Moe's, etc.). It f-ing sucks. There are now hobo's, and I mean HOBO's that are outcasts of downtown Atlanta... the homeless in town don't want them around, camping out on the side of Roswell Rd in the bushes and on Marta benches. I've tried to get the city to get rid of them, get them appropriate help and all... but they don't care. The same sketchy as all hell hobo's have been at Northridge area for months and months. The place is shattered economically. The employees are flat out rude corrupt trash with no education at all. This thread is 3 years old, but it's worse now... I want to make waves and kick city hall in the ass. They don't have a single thought about the health of the community. They just want to make money. It's BAD and the pandemic has just put the nail in the coffin (not that it wasn't already shitfless garbage).
