[BREAKING NEWS] Toys R Us to Shutter Eight Georgia Stores

Toys R Us announced late Tuesday that it will close about 180 stores with plans to restructure and emerge from bankruptcy protection.  The closures, which still need court approval, documents show, equate to about one-fifth of its U.S. store count.  If approved, affected stores would begin liquidation sales as soon as early February, with plans to shut down completely by mid April.
The former Toys R Us in Buckhead
ToNeTo Atlanta reported in September that Toys R Us filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

"The reinvention of our brands requires that we make tough decisions about our priorities and focus," Chairman and Chief Executive Officer David Brandon wrote Tuesday in a memo to customers. "The actions we are taking are necessary to give us the best chance to emerge from our bankruptcy proceedings as a more viable and competitive company."  The Wayne, New Jersey-based retailer added that a number of its existing locations will be co-branded as Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores.

In Georgia, the retailer plans to close eight stores:

2601 Dawson Road, Albany (Toys R Us)
2955 Cobb Parkway, Smyrna (Toys R Us and Babies R Us)
6380 North Point Parkway, Alpharetta (Babies R Us)
1155 Mt. Vernon Highway, Dunwoody (Babies R Us)
6875 Douglas Boulevard, Douglasville (Babies R Us)
8160 Mall Parkway, Conyers Lithonia (Babies R Us)
221 Newnan Crossing Bypass, Newnan (Babies R Us)
132 Pavilion Parkway, Fayetteville (Toys R Us and Babies R Us)

In 2015, Toys "R" Us closed metro locations in Tucker and Buckhead.

Among the stores not marked for closure are those on Turner Hill Road in Lithonia and on Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth. The areas around The Mall at Stonecrest in Lithonia and Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth have both been hit hard by retail closures so its surprising, yet good to hear that both areas were spared by this round of closures. [Edit: The Babies R Us store, identified by the company as being in Conyers, is in fact in Lithonia, near The Mall at Stonecrest.]

The retailer also plans to keep open stores  in Woodstock, Lithonia, Kennesaw, Buford, Athens, Rome,Warner Robins, Commerce and Columbus, among others.

Are you surprised by the stores that Toys R Us elected to close?  What would you like to see open in the soon to close Toys R Us stores?  When was the last time you made a purchase at Toys R Us?

I went to Toys R Us (Cobb Pkwy location) just before Christmas to pick up a few toys for a Toys for Tots drive. It was pretty unimpressive. Barely anything was on sale (in December?!) and they only had one register open, which also served as the customer service desk so you have to wait for people to make returns, complaints and what not before you could just pay for your items.

I hate that store. They always only have one register open and the line is always loooooong. That being said, I have several gift cards that I'll have ot use before they totally go belly up! LOL

8160 Mall Parkway LITHONIA is the address of Babies R Us at Stonecrest Mall. I don't think there is a Mall Parkway in Conyers. So it appears that Stonecrest is affected again.
