Spa Sydell Secures Sizable Space in Buckhead for Return to Where it All Started

Spa Sydell is returning to Buckhead for a third time.  The new spa is slated to open in the ground level retail of the new Modera Buckhead high-rise apartment building. The residential tower - currently under construction - is located at the corner of Pharr and Peachtree Roads adjacent to The Shops Buckhead Atlanta.  Spa Sydell will occupy Suite A, a 5,561 square foot space, according to marketing documents promoting the collective 25,000 square feet of retail space at the 22 story, 425 unit project.

Originally founded in Buckhead in 1982 by Sydell Harris, Spa Sydell has gone through tough times and multiple owners over the past few years.  The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009, and soon after, closed a number of stores including those in Buckhead on West Paces Ferry Road, Roswell in Roswell Corners shopping center, Smyrna at Cumberland Mall, and in Duluth on Pleasant Hill Road near Gwinnett Place Mall.

Reina Bermudez, who became Chief Executive Officer in 2011 after directing the company’s financial affairs for several years, also became the company's owner.

In 2016, following the company's second Chapter 11 filing, locations in Alpharetta, south Buckhead (Brookwood Place) and Kennesaw closed.   Planned locations in Sandy Springs and Huntville, Alabama were canceled despite the fact that leases had been signed.

Local businessman Matthew Bine acquired Spa Sydell this past September.  According to Bine's LinkedIn page, he is "in the process of adding locations and technology to keep up with the growing demand of individuals who desire to stay looking and feeling their best."

Currently, Spa Sydell operates just three locations: Cumming, Perimeter Place in Dunwoody across from Perimeter Mall, and at The Forum on Peachtree Parkway in Norcross.

The Spa Sydell website indicates that the concept's branding has been tweaked, perhaps to move the company in a new direction.  Launched in 1982 as "Sydell - Skin Care Salon," the company is today marketed as "Spa Sydell Integrative Aesthetics."

Today, the spa's offerings include "advanced facial & body treatments" such as pigment removal, wrinkle reduction/anti-aging, acne treatment and laser hair removal.  Other offerings include different massages such as deep tissue, prenatal and Swedish, and manicures and pedicures.

Are you surprised to see Spa Sydell returning to Buckhead?  What is your current opinion of the Spa Sydell brand?  Where is your favorite spa in metro Atlanta?

There is an odd looking sign at perimeter Place on olde Perimeter just above where the eyeglass store used to be that says spa Seidel is now here. Wonder what that is about.
