[ALERT] Boston Market Exits East Cobb, Chipotle Rolling In

Quick-serve restaurant Boston Market has closed its longstanding location at 3606 Sandy Plains Road in East Cobb.  The restaurant, located in a freestanding building near the intersection of Sandy Plains and Shallowford Roads, closed Sunday night, according to local sources and another Atlanta area location of the restaurant chain.
The Boston Market restaurant is 3,414 square feet on about 1.1 acres, and was built in 1994, according to Cobb County property records.

Boston Market, originally Boston Chicken, was started in Newton, Massachusetts in 1984 and was owned by McDonald's from 2000 until 2007.  Today, the chain is based in Golden, Colorado and is owned by Sun Capital Partners, a private equity firm.

Following the closure, Boston Market has only a handful of Atlanta area locations including those on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs, Briarcliff and North Druid Hills Road not far from Toco Hills, Powers Ferry Road, in the same center at Smoke + Duck Sauce and CVS  not far from SunTrust Park, and on Holcomb Bridge Road in Roswell.  The chain also has locations on Highway 29 in Lilburn, Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth and two in Stone Mountain, one on Stone Mountain Highway, the other on Redan Road.

Interestingly, ToNeTo Atlanta has learned that Chipotle Mexican Grill, also formerly a McDonald's majority owned subsidiary (1999-2006), will open in the former Boston Market.

The upcoming Chipotle has since at least December appeared as a "coming soon" location on the restaurant's mobile ordering platform.

Real estate sources indicate that Chipotle was previously planning to open in the upcoming Fuqua Development project on the site of the old Mountain View Elementary School nearby, but that they pulled out months ago.  The project, to be anchored by Atlanta's first GreenWise Market by Publix, is a mere two tenths of a mile away from the Boston Market and is expected to bring a host of new retail and dining options to the area.
Chipotle already operates a number of restaurants in Cobb county including one on Johnson Ferry Road in an out-parcel of Merchants Walk in East Cobb, as well as locations on Townpark Lane and Ernest Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw.

The new Chipotle in East Cobb and another on Peachtree Street in the street level retail of the 1010 condo building are expected to open later this summer, according to a Chipotle spokesperson.  Another Chipotle coming to Bullsboro Road in Newnan is expected to open January 31.

Even still, Chipotle announced plans last summer to close dozens of stores, though none are known to have shuttered in Georgia.

Newport Beach, California-based Chipotle Mexican Grill currently operates more than 50 restaurants in Georgia including newly opened locations on Northside Drive at 17th Street in the new Fuqua Development project, West Midtown Center, and on Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross, among others.

Are you excited for the opening a new Chipotle in East Cobb? Will you miss Boston Market?  What restaurant would you most like to see next open in the area?

I can't believe that location stayed open as long as it did....it was a super sad situation in that store. I stopped eating chicken years ago but even the side dishes that I used to love had a weird taste that cured any hankering I had to visit Boston Market.

One thing that location has in it's favor is a very popular liquor store right next to it (Bullock's). If Chipotle adds a drive-thru window, I think they can get a lot of business since thousands of cars will pass by on their way home every night.

What I like about Chipotle is that:
1. You can get gluten free, a big plus for one in my family that requires it.
2. Burrito bowls -- I recently lost 60 lbs and burrito bowls are a luxury that helps in weight loss (skip the rice).
3. Reasonable cost.
Chipotle isn't for everyone. But I like it.
