[CLOSURE ALERT] Pappy Red's BBQ Closes Westside Location, Ends Longstanding Tradition

P. Red's BBQ, a Westside mainstay for about nine years, has closed.  The restaurant, also known as Pappy Red's or simply Red's BBQ, was located at 999 Chattahoochee Avenue.  It opened in 2010 and was the first ITP location of the onetime chain of barbecue restaurants.
About twenty years ago, there were a at least three locations, including one on Buford Highway in Cumming, one on Arnold Mill Road in Roswell, and one on Georgia 140 between Crabapple and Canton, each with the distinctive remnants of a “crashed” airplane protruding from the building’s roof.

The restaurant and catering operation, which featured barbecue "Cooked the Old Southern Traditional Way over Hickory Wood Slow & Fresh," was started by Pappy Red, grandfather of the current owners.

The Marie Let's Eat blog did a post in 2011 about the restaurant, covering both the food and some of the history behind the restaurant.
A ToNeTo Atlanta reader spotted crews removing the airplane from the Chattahoochee restaurant late Wednesday.  While the restaurant's phone has not yet been disconnected, the message one hears when calling is that Red's is closed permanently.  It's unclear when the restaurant's final day of service was.

Did you ever dine at P. Red's?  Did you always pass that "building with the plane coming out of it" and wonder what it was?  What is your favorite Westside eatery that no longer exists today?

I used to dine at Pappy Red's at the Arnold Mill and Hwy 20 locations before they closed, but never made it down to the location on the Westside. My favorite was a pulled pork sandwich on jalapeno bread, with a side of broccoli casserole.

The place always looked like it was closed! I've lived over here the entire time, and I never once walked in there, despite having been to the one way out in the sticks. There are actually plenty of other good BBQ options in this area.

P. Red's had the best BBQ! When I lived in Liberty Park I would get a BBQ sandwich at least once a week. Sad to hear they are closing.

So sad so see them go! It was a fun and yummy bbq spot on the west side. Loved the guys behind the counter.

I will never forget that the day I went to Pappy Red's for a lunch and I had rack of ribs with french fries and a lot of that amazing barbecue sauce. I've kept that day in my memories because of that air craft right into the restaurant roof's. By the way, I'm a brazilian guy, living in Brazil aqnd guess what, my dream to come back to visit it again, won't happen anymore...
I went to Pappy Red's restaurant in an year of 2000.

Much missed, they had the best rids, and their beloved jalapeƱo bread, I live in South Carolina and would always take many loaves of the bread to share and keep in freezer at home.I Miss Chip and his sweet daddy behind the counter

I was in Alpharetta on business in the early 2000s and went to Pappy Red's in Cumming. It was, and is still, the best barbecue I've ever had. Too bad to see it go.
