[UPDATE] Carvana Vending Machine Moving Forward in Atlanta

In November 2017, ToNeTo Atlanta reported that Carvana planned to bring one of their car vending machines to metro Atlanta.  Now, nearly two years later, visible work is finally underway to bring the development to life.  Visible from I-75/85 south and not far from Atlantic Station, the twelve story car vending machine will open at 166 16th Street next year.

The development will be paired with a new, nine story Extra Space Self Storage project.  Yes, you heard that right. Extra Space Storage, which just opened a new location on Northside Drive at Fuqua Development's West Midtown Center, is also opening here, just over a mile away.

Permits filed with the City of Atlanta in late September indicate that $2,000,000 will be spent on the Carvana project.  The permit describes the development: "Customer Center - Bldg. B: New 1-story building (5,333 sq. ft.) new construction 3113 SF office, 2200 S-I automated 12 tier vehicle storage rack w/ 2 ground level delivery."

A separate permit indicates than $3,800,000 will be spent to construct the six level, climate-controlled self storage facility.

Carvana currently operates a total of 23 car vending machines around the country, according to a company representative.   Existing Carvana car vending machines include those in Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Tempe, Los Angeles, Nashville, Raleigh, Charlotte, Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando and Washington, D.C., among others.

The company currently operates a small scale car sales facility at 1026 Marietta Street.  Real estate sources indicate that the company plans to close the Marietta outpost when the 16th Street facility opens.

Launched in Phoenix, Arizona in 2012 with the backing of DriveTime, a traditional used-car retailer, Carvana was spun off in late 2014.  Carvana became a publicly traded company in April 2017 when they debuted on the New York Stock Exchange under symbol CVNA.  The stock is up a staggering 137 percent this year and currently trades at just under $80 per share.

Where did you buy your last vehicle?  Have you had any experiences good or bad with Carvana?  Are you excited by the idea of  a car vending machine?

Extra Space simply manages these facilities for a fee so they don't care if they are 1 mile away or 1 foot away from an existing facility. The developers who are building irresponsibly are who you should be frustrated with.
