[EXCLUSIVE] Popular South Florida Mofongo Eatery Opening in Marietta

Chef Jimmy Carey, known to some as "Miami’s master of mofongo," will be opening a new location of his popular restaurant Jimmy'z Kitchen in metro Atlanta.  The new eatery, to be located at 2468 Windy Hill Road in Marietta, replaces a similar eatery that closed this summer.
Buen Provecho, which opened in 2015, closed as of July 27. Owner Elmer Passapera started the business as a catering company in 2007, later expanding to a food truck in 2011.  Passapera closed the restaurant to move to Florida with his family, whereas Carey is opening in Marietta due to high rents in south Florida.  Late last month, Passapera reopened Buen Provecho in Cape Coral in southwest Florida.

Buen Provecho served a variety of Puerto Rican staples including mofongos, chuletas, pernil and tostones, while Jimmy’z Kitchen specializes in Puerto Rican, Spanish, Latin and Caribbean cuisine.  Both restaurants are known for their mofongo, a Puerto Rican dish that features fried plantains that are picked green and fried, then mashed with salt, garlic, broth, and olive oil in a wooden pilón.

At one time, Carey operated a total of four locations in South Florida but today operates just one, on Alton Road in South Beach.  This past March, Carey closed his restaurant in the Miami neighborhood of Wynwood blaming the closure on out of control rent.

The new 2,500 square foot Jimmy'z Kitchen in Northpark Pavilion Shopping Center makes use of a second generation restaurant space and is located in an area that is surely more reasonable rent wise than South Florida.

Carey is in the final stages of permits with Cobb County and renovations of the restaurant and hopes to be open before the end of the year.

Are you a fan of Puerto Rican cuisine?  Have you ever been to Jimmy'z Kitchen in Miami?  Are you excited for the opening of Jimmy'z Kitchen in Marietta?

Come to Knoxville, you'll be the ONLY decent Latin restaurant here. I'll be there weekly at least. For now, I'll be satisfied to go Marietta as I visit Atlanta once a quarter for business.
