[EXCLUSIVE] Publix Planning New Store in Crowded East Cobb Market

After several years of rumors, we can now confirm that a new Publix Super Market is headed to East Cobb!  The new store, to be located at the corner of Roswell and Johnson Ferry Roads, will occupy an approximately 37,400 square foot space next to Dick's Sporting Goods in East Cobb Crossing shopping center, according to a recently updated siteplan.  Dick's opened in its roughly 50,400 square foot space in 2015.   Together, the two retailers occupy what was previously a Kmart store.

In East Cobb Crossing, Publix joins not only Dick's, but junior anchors Ashley Furniture HomeStore and Party City, among other tenants.

Publix joins a crowded grocery corridor that already includes another Publix, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods Market, Walmart Neighborhood Market, Target, Sprouts Farmers Market, Kroger, and soon, German discount grocer Lidl, in a recently shuttered The Fresh Market.

The existing nearby Publix, a 56,000 square foot store in Woodlawn Point along Johnson Ferry Road, is reportedly one of the top performing Publix stores in the state.  Industry sources see the opening of the new Publix, a mere 1.3 miles from the Woodlawn store, as a defensive measure to support the existing store.  Rival grocer Kroger did a similar thing in 2016 when it opened its Glenwood Place store a mere 1.8 miles from its top performing store at the Edgewood Retail District.

Lakeland, Florida-based Publix has several stores already under construction with several more in the pipeline in the greater metro Atlanta area, including at least one in a high profile in-town location, according to well placed real estate sources.

A few miles away from the East Cobb Crossing store, Publix is expected to later this spring open the state's first GreenWise Market, a separate concept the expansion of which the company announced in 2017 it would restart after a decade long lull.  The 25,000 square foot store will anchor the new Sandy Plains Marketplace project on Sandy Plains Road near Shallowford Road.

Privately held Publix was established in Winter Haven, Florida in 1930.  Today, the grocer operates more than 1,200 stores including nearly 200 in Georgia, making the Peach State the company's second largest market after its home market where it operates more than 800 stores.

Are you excited about the upcoming Publix, Lidl and GreenWise openings in East Cobb?  Do you think the area can support two Publix stores so close together?  What is your favorite grocer?

Wow. There is also one not far away at East Piedmont/Roswell. Seems close for 3 different stores but glad it'll help all of them be less crowded.

I am thrilled. The one at Woodlawn is far too crowded!

Maybe 2 miles from the proposed new site next to Dicks

Well that should make a big difference for those of us that live on Roswell road and have to go through 7 lights before we get to the publix at
Woodlawn, What used to take 5 minutes to get to Woodlawn now you have to go through 7 lights and it usually 15 to 18 minutes to get to Woodlawn

As long as this new store is as good as the Woodlawn store. The Shallowford/Johnson Ferry store (which is closer to my home) is not very good. I go out of my way to the Woodlawn store. This new location is on my every day route.

Why not something else like a bigger Trader Joe's or an Aldi's? Why put 2 of the same store so close??

Why the hell are they opening more publix stores when they should be updating the ones they currently have?? I've worked at a few myself and theres a hell of a lot of fixing that needs to get done and on top of that they say they can't really give people hours so where the fuck is this money coming from that they can buy out all these different places?? Just wondering since nobody else wants to ask

Surprises you're asking anonymously. Benefits are expensive full time is earned & only awarded to those willing to work for it, going above & beyond, being a team player, seeing what needs to be done & doing it. Slackers give everyone a bad name.

Im not a Publix girl! Wish we had a great Aldi coming to this location. We have 2 Publix that are really close and 3 Krogers so don't see how this will be a benefit. Wont be shopping there anytime soon.

Soooo excited!!! Did not enjoy going to the other one bc of the crowded parking lot which was difficult to get in and out of. Now I will go to publix more than Kroger bc there will be one closer.

Shopped at a Lidl in Europe. I hope their bakery is as good! I will definitely be checking it out when it opens. Where I live there are 2 Publix stores within 1 mile (East or West). I do shop both of these stores depending on what else I am doing. The bigger Publix does carry more items but the littler Publix carries most everything I want.

We are not fans of Publix. Like Kroger better for prices and friendliness(Shallowford store) Second for us is Trader Jones and then Sprouts for seafood and produce. Maybe once a month in Publix for a specific item and occasionally WalMart. Never Whole Foods. We did like Fresh Market

You are so right. Worked for them. All about the money, not the employees!!!

The store will be a Greenwise store.

oh my god I love publix but this is more the same! Why don't they open the new green wise market here instead? It's going to be a smaller publix anyway so open something different.I wished Lidl would have opened up here instead of The Fresh Market location. I Miss The Fresh Market.

The anon who said the Woodlawn store is better than Shallowford has it exactly backwards. Woodlawn has cranky, surly management and an inferior seafood department. This new store will be TINY and probably wont have a pharmacy as they are not the profit centers they once were. But we'll see.

I remember when the closest Publix was well inside the FL border. First locations in GA were in Cobb County. It was the only thing missing to make it the greatest place to live. I'm not sure there could be too many Publix locations. The one at Woodlawn became cramped after only a few years and the one at Shallowford Rd has always felt overwhelmingly large. I hope Publix will figure out how to make it accessible to consumers, as traffic at this intersection has been difficult to manage for 10+ years.

The Publix at Woodlawn is the BEST. Great manager, the i staff is cooperative and kind. If you need a certain product and can’t find ut a staff member will take you to it. Not point in the direction. The store is clean and again the staff, including cashiers, people working in various section, the baggers, etc. it is convenient and we are delighted with them.barest buy one get one and IF you only want one it rings up half price.
