[UPDATE] Grand Champion Being Replaced by Bayou'Q in Roswell

Grand Champion BBQ has closed its restaurant on Canton Street in Historic Downtown Roswell.  The restaurant, located at 982 Canton Street, opened in early 2016, and reportedly closed quietly in the last few weeks, according to local area sources.  ToNeTo Atlanta could not find an announcement of the closure, but the Canton Street location has been removed from the company's website.  The Roswell outpost is the second the local group has closed in the past few months following last year's closure of the food stall at Inman Park's Krog Street Market.

When Grand Champion opened in 2016, it replaced Nine Street Kitchen which had been in business about seven years.

Our friends at Scoop OTP reported February 27 that Roswell resident Marcus Dickman will open Cajun barbecue restaurant Bayou'Q in place of Grand Champion.

"Bayou’Q will be a cajun twist on the traditional BBQ featuring house-smoked tasso in our version of Shrimp N Grits, Po’ Boy sandwiches, Zydeco oysters, Cajun Cracklins, plus the more traditional brisket, ribs, chicken, house-made sausage, and our unique sides including spicy greens, mama’s Mac-n-Cheese, and more!"

Despite the closures, the owners of Grand Champion still operate three locations - Shallowford Road in Roswell, Crabapple Road in Milton, and on North Marietta Parkway at Marietta Square Market - and have two new locations in the works.

In Smyrna, Grand Champion will open at The Eddy at Riverview Landing, a new mid-rise apartment development.  In Suwanee, Grand Champion will open along Buford Highway at the new Siena Suwanee Town Center apartments.

Are you surprised that Grand Champion closed their Canton Street restaurant?  Where is your favorite barbecue in metro Atlanta?  What would you like to see open in place of Grand Champion on Canton Street?

Lived two miles away and spent many nights in downtown Roswell. Never hit up Grand Champion. Rumor always was that because of the building, they cooked in other locations and heated after it arrived here. Hopefully, the new spot is successful. It sounds enticing.

It always appeared to be empty. I ate at another one of their locations many years ago and did not like it -- white bread? No thanks.
