[EXCLUSIVE] Trendy Furniture Retailer Returning to Atlanta

CB2, the younger sibling of home furnishings retailer Crate & Barrel, is returning to Atlanta!  Previously located on Peachtree Street in Midtown, the new CB2 will be located at 1197 Howell Mill Road in the Westside Provisions District in Atlanta's red hot West side.  The new CB2 will occupy a 8,350 square foot space that fellow home furnishings retailer Bungalow Classic vacated in May when they relocated and downsized slightly to a roughly 7,500 square foot space nearby at 763 Trabert Avenue.

CB2's original foray into the Atlanta market was in the street level retail of the 1010 Midtown condo tower.  The roughly 14,000 square foot space opened in 2010 but closed in late 2015, citing a rent increase as the primary reason for the closure.  Today CB2's former space is occupied by Piedmont Healthcare, Chipotle Mexican Grill, a Better Homes & Gardens brokerage and HotBox, an infrared sauna studio.

One likely reason for the CB2's Atlanta return is that they continued to see robust online and catalog orders from customers in the metro Atlanta area.  Leasing space from either Selig Enterprises in Midtown (1010) or Jamestown on the West side (Westside Provisions District) is no doubt expensive but CB2's now smaller footprint - 40% less than their initial store - surely made feasible their return.

In Westside Provisions District, CB2 will join fellow furniture retailers Room & Board and Design Within Reach.

Crate & Barrel operates two full-line stores in metro Atlanta, both of which relocated to their current locations.  Currently Crate & Barrel is at Shops Around Lenox in Buckhead (formerly at Lenox Square) and Avalon in Alpharetta (formerly on North Point Drive near North Point Mall).

The new CB2 in Atlanta will mark the chain's twentieth full-line store in the U.S.  The company also operates one outlet store in Naperville, Illinois and a pair of additional stores in Canada.

CB2 is currently hiring for several positions, and despite no permits having been filed for the new space with the City of Atlanta, the company anticipates that they will open "this year."

Are you pleased to see CB2 returning to Atlanta?  What is your go-to place for furniture?  What retailer, restaurant or other business previously in Atlanta would you like to see return?

Please share your thoughts below.

Glad to see they’re trying again. The previous Midtown location was not as successful as they had anticipated. They believed they would capture a number of customers from that immediate area, but the “live and shop” concept in Atlanta hadn’t been as successful as it is in NYC and other cities. They also have a huge customer base in the suburbs and those folks are less likely to drive down Peachtree to shop, and parking was extremely limited anyway. They have maintained a large online order volume here all along, and now that the business is a little more mature, this is a better time to try another store.

Pretty sure I'm a huge part of those online orders. :-)

When will they be opening? Hopefully, in time my new construction home is finished.

I'm so glad they are back. I live in the 1010 Midtown condo building. I am still butt-hurt that Selig jacked-up the rent on their marginally profitable store and drove them out. The store's beautiful window displays lit-up at night added charisma to 'the curve'. And now...Chipotle. The CB2 regional manager said they would return to Atlanta when they found the right location.
