A new Lidl grocery store is planned near Decatur where it will replace an automotive business. The new Lidl, planned for 1788 Lawrenceville Highway, would replace Vol Repair II which is the latest automotive business to operate from the freestanding building. The new Lidl would be located a stone's throw from where rival grocer Aldi opened a new store in Decatur Crossing February 1, 2018.
The new Lidl store will be about 30,000 square feet and should open sometime in 2023, according to a source familiar with the grocer's plans.
Lidl is expected to open three stores during the first half of 2022 including those on Memorial Drive near Kirkwood, as well as others in Buford and Cumming. Last July, Lidl opened a new store in what is amazingly now part of Brookhaven, at Brighten Park at the corner of Briarcliff and North Druid Hills Roads. The Brighten Park store replaced what had most recently been a location of The Fresh Market and is about five miles from the upcoming Lawrenceville Highway store.
ToNeTo Atlanta reported October 12 that Publix plans to open their new, roughly 54,000 square foot store at the new Sam's Crossing development along East Ponce de Leon Avenue, about two miles from the new Lidl store, November 3.
Are you pleased to see more grocery options coming to the Decatur area? What other grocer would you like see open in the area? Do you have a preference between Aldi and Lidl?

Not sure it's a good idea for either Lidl or Aldi to open too close to Kroger or Publix.
VERY HAPPY to have a decent business replacing VOL Repairs, which is a neighborhood nuisance.
Yeah, I mean who wants better prices and competition.
The Brighten Park store is nice to have but it is absolutely tiny. Maybe a third the size of other Lidl stores in the area. Maybe the numbers work for Lidl but that store simply doesn't carry anywhere all the items I need. This new store will at least save me a drive to Snellville to shop at a full size Lidl.
The Mableton store is a across the street from a Kroger, next to a Lidl, and up the road from a Food Depot.
