[EXCLUSIVE] Academy Sports "Scores" Space for New Store

A new Academy Sports + Outdoors is coming soon to Dunwoody.  The new store, slated to open later this fall, will open in place of Bed Bath & Beyond which closed its store at 130 Perimeter Center West in February.   The new Academy store, while still OTP, will be the closest intown the Katy, Texas-based company operates a store in metro Atlanta.  The roughly 50,000 square foot store joins existing anchors T.J. Maxx, Haverty's, PetSmart and Total Wine & More in the Perimeter Square shopping center.

Academy Sports currently operates a total of 260 stores nationwide including nineteen in Georgia.  The company's newest store, which will officially celebrate its "grand opening" this coming Friday April 29, is in a new center at 1448 Salem Road in Conyers.

Rival athletic goods retailer operates Dick's operates eighteen full-line stores in Georgia including one in Dunwoody's Perimeter Point shopping center which replaced a former Sports Authority in early 2017.

What is your favorite store for athletic gear?  Are you pleased to see Academy Sports opening in Dunwoody?  What other types of stores would you like to see open in the area?

Oooh, actually very pleased with this. Academy has good prices on various things, they probably carry a lot more 'budget' lines than Dicks, but if you or your kids are not hardcore sports/camping people then this is ok. And their stores are mostly really far OTP so I welcome this and will probably do some shopping there.

Better location than Dick's which is in a center with lots of empty storefronts and outlots. Is there any real difference b/w Academy and Dick's?

Prices, definitely. Academy tends to have a bigger selection and less expensive prices. However, I’ve only ever shopped Academy online, for full disclosure.

This is GREAT news! A legitimate sporting goods store where I can spend my money and not support the "wokeness" of a commie organization like dicks!

I'm looking forward towards Academy Sports and Outdoors coming to Dunwoody. Now I won't have to drive a half hour to go to an Academy Sports store.

Big difference. Dicks stopped selling fishing stuff

Lived in Houston, basically home of Academy (Katy is a suburb), and Academy is awesome. Selection is broader than Dick’s and prices less. That and they haven’t kowtowed to get rid of their firearms section.
