[ALERT] Oh No! Buckhead Loses Beloved Retailer

In a move that many will find shocking and disappointing, Mattress Firm has closed its store at 3158 Peachtree Road (Peachtree Plaza) in Buckhead.  The store, which occupied a 4,650 square foot space in the small strip center along Peachtree Road, closed in recent days with signage directing would-be patrons to the nearby Mattress Firm at 3275 Peachtree Road (Buckhead Sqaure), about a half mile away.

Both Peachtree Plaza and Buckhead Square are owned and managed by Atlanta-based Selig Enterprises, Inc.

The closure, the Houston, Texas-based retailer's third in Buckhead in recent years, follows others on Sidney Marcus Boulevard in Buckhead Crossing in 2021 and along Peachtree Road in Buckhead Walk in 2017. When the Buckhead Crossing store opened in 2011, it replaced Coco Loco, a popular family-owned Cuban and Caribbean eatery that had been in business for nearly 25 years.   Today the roughly 3,200 square foot space is vacant.

Following years of seemingly endless and unnecessary expansion, Mattress Firm came to the realization in 2017 that it had too many stores.  The company subsequently filed a lawsuit against both its then master broker as well as several then senior executives within its organization.

In 2018 the company began to "right size" its store fleet, and following several rounds of closures, has today reduced its store count by more than 30%, down from about 3,600 stores to about 2,400 stores, 2,000 of which still seem to be within metro Atlanta.

Former Mattress Firm stores in Sandy Springs and East Cobb later reopened as outposts of locally owned adult novelty store Tokyo Valentino.  Despite community uproar in advance of both locations opening, each did operate for a time but only the Sandy Springs store remains in business today with the East Cobb store having been forced shut by a Cobb County Superior Court judge in 2021.

In Peachtree Plaza, Mattress Firm is the latest in a string of recent departures where popular local eatery White House Restaurant still holds court.  Beverly Bremer Silver Shop closed its outpost within the center earlier this year after nearly 50 years in business.  Ginger Howard Selections, a locally owned women's boutique, closed its shop in the center at the end of 2020 after two decades in business.  In early 2021, Howard reopened her shop at Cates Center on nearby East Andrews Drive in Buckhead Village.  SwissWatchExpo, another former Peachtree Plaza tenant, relocated to its own building on East Paces Ferry Road across from Al's Cafe Agora in 2020.

What would you like to see open in place of Mattress Firm at Peachtree Plaza? Where did you purchase your last mattress? When was the last time you ate at White House Restaurant?

Please share your thoughts below.

I haven't shopped in a mattress store for decades. We've bought the last couple mattresses from a friend's family owned furniture store (for ourselves), and The Dump for guest rooms. I think we're going to end up ordering our next mattress online.

It's been a long time since I ate at White House, not since before the pandemic. I liked it well enough, and I'm glad they're surviving.

Buckhead has become an apocalyptic war zone. Why would anyone want to go to the new Bankhead, the crime and muggings and carjackings and shootings and homeless and trash and construction and everyone wearing a mask like it's still March of 2020.
