[CLOSURE ALERT] Bakery Cafe Shutters Third Atlanta Area Location This Year

Corner Bakery Cafe today shuttered its location at Akers Mill Square near Cumberland Mall.  The restaurant, which opened in 2013, occupied a 3,800 square foot space made available when LongHorn Steakhouse relocated elsewhere in the center to a portion of the former Circuit City.

No official reason was provided for the sudden closure, but sources close to the restaurant indicate that there had been a disagreement over back rent relating to COVID-19 and that the center's landlord, Olshan Properties, ultimately prevailed when the issue was taken to court.

Corner Bakery's closure in Akers Mill Square is the seventh closure for the chain in metro Atlanta since the start of the pandemic.  ToNeTo Atlanta reported in August 2020 that the chain had closed their restaurant on Haynes Bridge Road in Alpharetta near North Point Mall.  Florida-based "bol" concept Bolay is slated to open in the former Alpharetta outpost August 11.  Three locations within Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport that were at the start of the pandemic only "temporarily closed" were later confirmed to be permanently closed.  A Corner Bakery in Lenox Square in Buckhead closed this past March, while another in Sterling Pointe along Ashford Dunwoody Road near Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody quietly closed this past May.

The bakery cafe concept has had several owners in its 31 year history.  Corner Bakery Cafe was founded in 1991 by Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, a Chicago-based restaurant group.   It was sold to Dallas-based Brinker International in 1995 and then in 2005 to Il Fornaio (America) Corporation.   Atlanta-based Roark Capital Group bought Il Fornaio in 2011 and later sold Corner Bakery to Pandya Restaurant Growth Brands in October 2020.

Following the closure, the company will have just three locations in Georgia: in the Southern Building on Peachtree Street downtown, on Peachtree Parkway in Peachtree Corners, and a location within the Maggiano's in Buckhead.

Are you surprised to see Corner Bakery close in Akers Mill Square?  What is your favorite bakery cafe concept?  What would you like to see open in place of Corner Bakery at Akers Mill Square?

I only ate at this location a handful of times, but I appreciated it (along with most of the closed locations). I feel like the concept is sadly on its way out given the number of closings here and elsewhere. I’d love to see a mashup that combines elements of Corner Bakery and Jason’s Deli (whose presence in the Cumberland area is also surely missed). Jason’s has healthier options and offers gluten-free bread and desserts.

It is a little disappointing as they were once a decent place to grab a quick lunch. However, the last few times I ate at one they just seemed to have lost something. I suppose we can write it off to labor issues or simply bad management.

Sad news. We loved their breakfast.

not long until they're all gone. I ate at the Peachtree Corners location and was given basically cheap deli turkey on wheat bread with potato chips served on a paper plate for MORE money than Panera costs. It was barely edible and insanely priced. Never again.
