[UPDATE] Publix Prepares for Chamblee Premiere

After hearing for weeks that Publix planned to open its new store in Chamblee August 24, and waiting to report it due to what seems like endless restaurant, retail and hotel delayed openings, representatives from Chamblee Plaza shared yesterday that the grocer is on track for its planned opening.  The new store, situated in a newly rebuilt portion of Chamblee Plaza (5534 Peachtree Boulevard), measures approximately 41,000 square feet and is one of several stores the Lakeland, Florida-based grocer is opening this year in metro Atlanta.

In Chamblee Plaza, Publix joins fellow anchors T.J. Maxx, HomeGoods and Crunch Fitness as well as smaller shops such as Five Below, Ace Hardware and Rack Room Shoes, among others.  Publix opening in Chamblee Plaza also marks the return of a true grocer to the more than sixty year old center that once housed Kroger and Colonial stores simultaneously, and later a Winn-Dixie.

ToNeTo Atlanta reported last June that Publix, already a dominant player in Atlanta's grocery market, was looking to add at least 15 new stores in the greater metro Atlanta area.  Several of those stores, including those in East Cobb, Dunwoody, Tucker and Avondale Estates have already opened, while others like those in Summerhill, McDonough, Athens and West Midtown are still under construction.

The upcoming wave of openings will give Publix more than 200 stores in Georgia.  LIDL, which by comparison has less than 20 stores in Georgia, announced this past week that it will close its eighteen month old store along Roswell Road in Sandy Springs. [Publix closed its GreenWise Market store in East Cobb this past December, also after only eighteen months in business.]  News of LIDL's closure led to quite the debate in our comments section where readers voiced their grocery preference, with some seeming to cheer LIDL's closure while others seemed almost distraught.

Are you excited for the opening of Publix in Chamblee Plaza?  Where do you do the majority of your grocery shopping?  What other types of stores or restaurants would you like to see open in Chamblee Plaza?

Please share your thoughts below.

I do love Publix but dang can we get another grocery store around here please? I enjoy variety and having Publix, Kroger and walmart as your major players gets kind of boring. I wish Harris Teeter would come back. Food City from Tennessee is a good grocery store. Ingles has a small footprint here. 200 stores in Georgia is a lot of the same.

let’s bring back hotel furniture liquidators! Yay! seriously in the new vacant retail spaces this would be a perfect location for a large format Dollar Tree, oh wait, are they now calling it Dollar Twenty Five tree? smh. I think the closest locations of dollar tree are very far away enough to justify this as a new location, especially given the exponential apartment dweller growth in Chamblee, which is ultimately what attracted Publix and the other large format stores to Chamblee Plaza. The city of Chamblee has done a very job to attract new mid to high rise apartment Community investors and builders. There is another huge complex under construction now at the former Great Gatsby’s and Pete Garcia sites plus the new complex going up at the Chamblee Dunwoody fork in the road at Peachtree. I believe other projects are in the works.

Harris Teeter? Now owned by - you guessed it - the Kroger company.

I agree! Food Lion, Lowes, Winn Dixie or something else would be great around here!!!!!

For that matter, let’s bring back Woolworth’s and Grant’s.

Harris Teeter is owned by Kroger now so that most likely won't happen.

Harris Teeter as has been mentioned, is now owned by Kroger. In some areas in the Carolina's they still operate as Harris Teeter, but they are pretty much exactly the same as Kroger. They are not like the Harris Teeter we had in ATL years ago.

So happy to have this Publix close by!

Well at least Harris Teeter is cleaner than some of the 1970 old Krogers. I mean come on Kroger clean up some of the old as* stores already! In speaking with Publix, they do a small update to each store every 5 to 6 years. That's why the look cleaner and fresh. "Hey kroger ... The bleach is on aisle 5 ... Use it!" Nasty.

We have Publix Kroger Lidl Aldi Target Walmart Whole Foods and you want another choice?

41,000 square feet seems a bit on the small side for a modern, large-format grocery store. How does that compare in size to some of the other Publix stores in the area?

I’m so excited to have Publix days away from opening. I moved to Chamblee after 25 years of living in Midtown Atlanta. Really the only other businesses on my Chamblee wishlist, are a Felinis and Superica.

I vote for Harris Teeter!!

We already have Kroger in the area. Harris Teeter and Kroger are identical now.

About the same size as the one at Johnson Ferry but smaller than Town Brookhaven and bigger than the one at Shallowford and 85.

Wegmans, as rumored but shot down in sandy springs

I agree with you. On another thread someone tried debating me on the virtues of Kroger over Publix, let’s just say they got informed

according to some Word on the street a West Coast grocer is strongly contemplating their entry into the Atlanta market in the former Kroger space at Cambridge Square in Brookhaven. I’m not sure who it might be but there are several grocers on the West Coast.

I am not sure about the square footage however the Publix at town Brookhaven has to be one of the very largest Publix in the area, it is huge and as clean as can be, nearby at Oglethorpe Crossing is a smaller format Kroger with no pharmacy and A smaller variety of items, nearby in the opposite direction is another small format Publix in Buckhead next to target on peachtree.

With today’s technology triggering replenishment and AI making suggestions or AI making actual procurement on a rotating variety of stock items based on customer behaviors and preferences they could get by with a smaller format store and still serve the needs of the community. Every single person that enters the store is being tracked, hopefully anonymously, but nevertheless they are tracking every every step you take in the store and what patterns your feet traverse while shopping and your search engine and website “clicks” within the area codes and ZIP Codes where your market serves. just like you see the dynamic ads on the websites you visit start to mirror your search engine searches, likewise, the grocers and the big box realtors get customer data also based on what has been trending in the clicks in your area so they could respond accordingly in dynamically updating and “refreshing” their merchandise mix. This is known as hyperlocal marketing. Hyperlocal marketing is defined as the process of targeting potential customers in a very specific, geographically limited area, sometimes a few blocks or streets, often with the purpose of targeting people conducting 'near me' searches on their smartphones. so interesting

I agree with you on the Fellini‘s, assuming they can keep up the quality. Point is the pizza options in the Chamblee/Brookhaven area are severely lacking since corner Pizza closed up after 13 years. Fellini‘s can be hit or miss but their general idea It’s good assuming they keep up the quality. We need a localized dine in pizza establishment in Chamblee/Brookhaven other than MOD which has a specific purpose and it’s not localized and Galla’s pizza whose quality has gone Sleeping with the fishes since the new ownership. vintage pizza used to be somewhat OK also but especially since Covid they’ve also changed. We need something new! I forget the name of the pizza shop that was in the current Willie’s Mexicana space on peachtree in BuckHaven. They had great pizzas, great staff, and great video games.

I’d love to see a Wegman’s come south! Or even Lowe’s Foods out of the Carolina’s…

Where in Sandy Springs were they considering Wegmans?

Growing up in Michigan, I'm partial to Kroger. It's the only one of the local chains that have ever been up there.

Living in Peachtree Corners, I shop mainly at the two Kroger stores down Holcomb Bridge, but I also shop at the two nearby Publix stores, on Spalding, and Holcomb Bridge. Every great once in a while, I'll swing by the Aldi on Peachtree Parkway, or the Ingles up the road from there.

I've been in the area long enough to remember when there was a Kroger on Peachtree Parkway, where Dick's and PetSmart are today. It was so weird to have a Kroger and a Publix practically next door to each other. That Kroger store was really old and rundown. When it closed, they gutted it down to the studs and renovated it into Dick's and PetSmart. Publix obviously won that fight.

Winn Dixie was ALREADY here, but left. The Goodwill store at Peachtree Parkway and Spalding was a Winn Dixie.

They were never considering a Wegmans in Sandy Springs. It was an unfounded rumor.

that’s the thing about Kroger they let their stores run to the ground without any budget given or investment whatsoever in maintenance and operations within any given year. The top management treats their stores like a pair of shoes they release it when it’s brand new and they wear it out until it’s not viable anymore, and then toss it away. they don’t bring it to the shoe repair even they just let the “souls” wear out. add toco Hills there’s a Publix and a Kroger a stones throw from each other as well as at Ansley mall, literally a stones throw from each other.

Target and Sophora ,Barnes and noble

We had a Winn-Dixie, where are the Publix Will be. It didn’t have enough business to stay in business.

Exactly! Raleigh has more variety than we do. How about Wegmans? I miss Harris Teeter too.

Surprised shamble hasn’t turned that center into another high rise apartment building. Chamblee is striving to be the “Dubai” of high-rise low cost Apartments..yay! It’s actually disappointing as the leaders missed great opportunities to make Chamblee in line or even better than Brookhaven and provide it with some nice character and presence on peachtree, and not just their downtown.

Came for the "we want Trader Joe's" comment. Leaving disappointed.

Preach!

Probably true, but the one one Amelia Island is just like the old Harris teeter we had here.
