[Shut & Opening] Sushi Shop Surrenders, Chicken & Waffles Joint Opening Nearby

RA Sushi has closed.  The two-story sushi restaurant occupied a nearly 7,000 square foot space in the street level retail of the 1010 Midtown condo tower, and after opening in mid 2009, reportedly closed Sunday, July 17.  RA was the last remaining original restaurant in the project which has over the years seen some of its spaces turn over two and three times.

RA Sushi is owned by Miami-based Benihana, which after closing its downtown Atlanta location in late 2018, continues to operate restaurants on Peachtree Road in Buckhead and on Mansell Road in Alpharetta.

There have been rumors throughout the years that RA would close, but despite a chef involved shooting last June, the restaurant remained open.  It's unclear what led to the recent decision to close.

In a space adjacent to RA along Crescent Avenue where Noon, Bantam + Biddy and The Federal all previously held court, Johnny's Chicken & Waffles appears to be opening, according to updated leasing materials from The Shopping Center Group. In early 2021, the chicken and waffle eatery debuted its first and currently only location on Main Street in College Park.

The eatery is owned by Grammy Award winner Ne-Yo (aka Shaffer Chimere Smith) and his wife Crystal Smith, and Karlie Redd, who starred on VH1′s “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta” and Bounce TV’s “Saints & Sinners.”

According to the Johnny's website, the College Park restaurant is open Sunday through Thursday 9 am until 11 pm, Friday and Saturday 9 am until 1 am.

Johnny's new location puts it just a few blocks from where T's Brunch Bar, serving a similar menu but with more limited hours, recently opened on the ground floor of the Metropolis condo building at 921 Peachtree Street.

Across the street from Johnny's, Urban Hai, a Szechuan Chinese restaurant, plans to open in August at 77 12th in a space previously occupied by BurgerFi.

Are you surprised that RA Sushi closed in Midtown?  Are you excited to hear that Johnny's Chicken & Waffles plans to open soon in place of The Federal?  What kind of restaurant do you think Midtown is lacking but would support?
