[CLOSURE ALERT] "Cheers of the South" Shutters After More Than Four Decades in Business

The Rusty Nail, a Sandy Springs mainstay for more than four decades, has closed.  The pub, located at 8549 Roswell Road, celebrated a "Last Call" Saturday, August 20, before closing for the final time.  Occupying a onetime KFC, The Rusty Nail Sandy Springs opened in 1978, four years after the original The Rusty Nail made its debut on Buford Highway, near its intersection with North Druid Hills Road, in Brookhaven.

According to The Rusty Nail Pub website, the restaurant prided itself on being the South's version of "Cheers."  Local resident Nick Cardellino, whose father and business partner Peter Hayes started the restaurants, is the current owner of them today.  Cardellino reportedly decided to close the Sandy Springs outpost to focus on the Buford Highway restaurant, home of the landmark 18-foot (smoking) gun.

In recent weeks the Sandy Springs restaurant (and accompanying real estate) were listed for sale by Steve Josovitz of The Shumacher Group.  According to Josovitz, the listing received "significant, immediate interest" and is currently under contract.  Josovitz was not at liberty to reveal the identity of the would-be buyer but did indicate that the roughly half acre property and 2,000 square foot building are expected to continue as a restaurant.  The business was priced at $950,000 and included real estate, furniture, fixtures and equipment.

The closure of The Rusty Nail in Sandy Springs, although definitely the most longstanding, is just the latest in a series of closures that have hit the metro Atlanta community.  Hammocks closed July 31, as did grocery store Lidl after just eighteen months in business.   More recently Plant Based Pizzeria closed its doors while just north of The Rusty Nail, entertainment facility Stars & Strikes closed in July 2020 and remains vacant today.

Are you sad to see The Rusty Nail close in Sandy Springs? What is your favorite Sandy Springs area restaurant?  What kind of restaurant would you most like to see open in place of The Rusty Nail in Sandy Springs?

Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came
You want to be where you can see
Our troubles are all the same
You want to be where everybody knows your name

A real oldie “Copperfields” back in the 70’s. Lot of crazy times!!!

Sandy Springs especially Roswell Road isn't what it used to be with old places being torn down, new ones popping up for fast food and other things. Sandy Springs has gotten quite built up over the years, but the Roswell Road area has gotten to be a traffic nightmare

On who’s barstools will their regulars park now?

Very sad!! Rusty Nail has been part of my life for a long time. So many nice customers and staff over the years. No matter when I stopped in always knew some of the people there. Will definitely miss it !!

Someone mentioned Copperfield's. Does anyone remember the Rusty Nail that was in Clarkston in early 80s? I used to visit that RN after my shifts at Copperfield's.

I went to the Clarkston location after my shifts at Steak&Ale (Memorial Dr)!
