Bits & Bites

A new location of Crumbl Cookies is planned for Toco Hills Promenade.  The new cookie shop will open in suite 260, a roughly 1,900 square foot space most recently home to a Jimmy Johns franchise.  The first Crumbl opened in Logan, Utah in 2017, and in the years since, the chain has experienced meteoric growth with nearly 650 locations open and dozens more in development.  In metro Atlanta, there are currently fifteen Crumbl franchises open including those in Alpharetta, Brookhaven, Buford, and Marietta, with at least one more coming soon to Sandy Springs.

Mobay Spice, a new restaurant offering authentic Caribbean cuisine, is also opening at Toco Hills in a space close to Crumbl.  Mobay Spice, which according to online reports is slated to debut in early January, will open in suite 220, a roughly 1,500 square foot space previously home to I Love Juice Bar.

Buff City Soap opened their newest Atlanta area location October 27 at Chamblee Plaza on Peachtree Boulevard in Chamblee.  The new Buff City is the third Atlanta area location for franchisee Alex Royter who also owns locations in Tuxedo Festival in Chastain Park and Halcyon in Alpharetta.

Boutique facial studio Heyday opened their second Atlanta area location November 17 at Midtown Promenade along Monroe Drive in Midtown.  The new location, like the Dunwoody location which opened in August, is owned by L5 Skincare, the Heyday franchising entity of Level 5 Capital Partners.  In addition to the Dunwoody and Midtown locations, a third Heyday is planned for early 2023 at Krog District near the BeltLine Eastside Trail in Inman Park.

Marshalls opened their latest Atlanta area location November 10 along Moreland Avenue in Edgewood Retail District.  The discount retailer opened in the 24,500 square foot space left vacant this past April when Barnes & Noble closed, marking the first anchor space to close in the center's 17 year history.

7 Brew, a new to market drive-thru coffee shop, is opening a new location in Buford.  The new 7 Brew is opening at 3700 Buford Drive, not far from Academy Sports + Outdoors and Texas Roadhouse.  The Rogers, Arkansas-based chain is also opening another franchise at 3253 Stone Mountain Highway in Snellville.

Donatos Pizza opened their new Avondale Estates location Tuesday November 8.  The new restaurant is located at 29 North Avondale Plaza and follows the October opening of the Donatos at the corner of North Druid Hills and LaVista Roads in Toco Hills.  Franchisee Drew Zorniger and his Oliver Restaurant Group, LLC plan to open several other Donatos locations in metro Atlanta in the years to come.

Rusty Taco is opening at Summerhill Station as part of new Publix-anchored development. The new eatery will be the first actual location for the taco joint in Atlanta.  Alliance Kitchen, a ghost kitchen collective operated by owner Inspire Brands, opened last fall on Ellsworth Industrial Boulevard in West Midtown and offers menu items from all six Inspire Brands (Buffalo Wild Wings, Arby's, Sonic, Dunkin', Jimmy John's and Rusty Taco.)

A new eatery called Cozy Coop has opened in a former Zaxby's in Marietta.  The restaurant, which celebrated its "grand opening" November 15, is located at 2500 Barrett Creek Boulevard just off Ernest Barrett Parkway, not far from Town Center at Cobb.  "Cozy Coop, the brainchild of restaurateur Mike Madonna and Atlanta hospitality veteran Ricky Navas, serves chef-driven fast food including high-quality fried chicken and other Southern favorites in a cozy, comfortable setting."  The new Cozy Coop is located behind a former Wendy's that reopened in 2021 as a drive-thru only Dunkin'.

A new Valvoline auto care center is coming to Smyrna.  The new Valvoline is planned for 3261 South Cobb Drive, at its intersection with Spring Road, on the site of a former Wells Fargo bank.  Another new Valvoline is planned for the site of a longtime Chevron at the corner of Roswell and Johnson Ferry Roads in East Cobb.

Buford Highway's Plaza Fiesta sold earlier this month and newly updated county records confirm the eye-popping sales price.  Asana Partners, whose Atlanta holdings already include Krog Street Market, Midtown Promenade and Brickworks in West Midtown, among others, paid $85.6 million to acquire the 32 acre property.  The property, originally opened in 1968 as Buford-Clairmont Mall, includes the 343,750 square foot indoor mall and also two freestanding pad sites, according to DeKalb County property deeds. A QT gas station and CVS pharmacy occupy the pad sites.   The property is valued at $46.8 million, according to the DeKalb County tax assessor's office. It last sold for nearly $42.3 million in 2006 to Dallas-based real estate investment firm Sarofim Realty Advisors.  The property was referred to as a "cash flow machine" in a LinkedIn post by one of the brokers handling the transaction, and while it draws in plenty of shoppers, it's also played host to several productions in recent years.  The new live action interpretation of the beloved children's book Harold and the Purple Crayon filmed in the center's Ollie's Bargain Outlet earlier this year, and the Netflix series Ozark has filmed both interior and exterior shots at the property in years past.

Sally Beauty plans to close 350 stores, many within the US, by the end of the year.  The Denton, Texas-based retailer made the announcement last week on the heels of the release of its Q4 earnings report.  Sally currently operates more than 5,000 stores worldwide, with approximately 4,500 in North America. The company operates dozens of stores in Georgia including several in metro Atlanta, including those in Chamblee, Tucker, Buckhead, Marietta, Decatur, and Duluth, among others.

Sloomoo Institute celebrated the grand opening of its Atlanta location Saturday, November 19.  The new experiential slime attraction opened in Buckhead Triangle near Phipps Plaza where it occupies the 28,000 square foot anchor space once home to Circuit City.  The vast space was completely transformed from its recent use as Kefi, a short-lived Chick-fil-A backed business, into a slime attraction complete with slime falls, slime slingshot and a slime lake! In addition to the original New York location which opened in 2019, a third Sloomoo also opened on November 19 in Chicago.

Costco opened its newest store in Georgia November 15 in Athens.  The new store is located at 5550 Parkway Boulevard and is the fifteenth in the state for the Issaquah, Washington-based chain.  Prior to Athens, the newest Atlanta area Costco opened last March in Dallas.  Unfortunately, there is no news on the would-be Costco intown, and sites considered near both North DeKalb and Northlake Malls seem out of the running.

CVS Pharmacy will on December 8 close their store on 3930 Shallowford Road in East Cobb.  The roughly 10,000 square foot pharmacy sits on nearly two acres and was built in 1997.

Tragic to see the Barnes & Noble close in the Edgewood Retail District and the Walmart of clothing stores, Marshalls, open in it's place. Already, virtually no bookstores on the east side of town. With the dumbing down of this country in effect and the destruction and closing of local newspapers, the last thing we need to see is a bookstore closing down. Hopefully, Barnes & Noble will find a new place to open so those of us in Decatur don't have to drive to Buckhead or Dunwoody to go to a B&N

Eagle Eye Books is an excellent bookstore at Clairmont and N Decatur Rd. Not a B&N, but long established, locally owned and has used books as well.
