Bits & Bites

Krispy Kreme has closed its donut box kiosk at Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody.  The shop closed just before the new year.   The doughnut shop opened in late 2019 in place of a kiosk that used to house an outpost of Carlo's Bakery, owned by "Cake Boss" owner Bartolo "Buddy" Valastro, Jr.  A former Carlo's Bakery at Cumberland Mall today operates as an outpost of Cami Cakes, a local cupcake shop.

Popeyes is now open in the food court at Cumberland Mall with plans to open soon in the food court at Lenox Square in Buckhead.  Both locations are owned and operated by International Restaurant Management Group (IRMG), a Coral Gables, Florida-based franchisee that already owns the Popeyes in Augusta Mall, among others it owns nationwide.

A new Aldi grocery store is opening at Browns Bridge Road and Bridgetown Drive in Cumming. The new grocery store will be 18,838 square feet.  The German grocer with U.S. headquarters in Batavia, Illinois currently has nearly 2,300 stores in America including 75 in Georgia.

Nowak's is targeting a February 15 opening in Sandy Springs.  The new restaurant, the sibling to the original in Morningside, replaces popular Cantonese restaurant Canton Cook II, which previously relocated to East Cobb.  The restaurant is located in Sandy Springs Crossing near the intersection of Roswell and Abernathy Roads.  Blaiss Nowak, son of Hal's on Old Ivy co-owner Hal Nowak, opened his original Morningside restaurant on Highland Avenue in early 2018.

Truck & Tap, a local bar with existing locations in Alpharetta, Duluth and Woodstock, and another planned for Norcross, is also planning to open in Lawrenceville, too.  The new Lawrenceville outpost will be located at 175 S. Perry Street.

United Community Bank is opening a new branch at Gateway Sandy Springs along Roswell Road in Chastain Park.  The Greenville, South Carolina-based bank is opening in a space that was originally home to a Charter Bank, which was acquired and re-branded as CenterState, that itself was acquired and rebranded as SouthState, before the branch was shuttered completely this past fall.  According to the United Community website, the bank operates more than two dozen branches in Georgia, but the new Chastain Park branch will the bank's first inside the perimeter (ITP).

Indian grocer Patel Brothers plans to "soft open" January 12 in Kennesaw at 2646 George Busbee Parkway.  The new store, on which ToNeTo Atlanta first reported in January 2022, will be the Hanover Park, Illinois-based chain's third in Georgia, joining existing locations in Decatur and Suwanee.

Best Time convenience store is closing in downtown Decatur.  The store, located at 565 North McDonough Street, is slated to close in the coming days.

Pet People has closed at Peachtree Battle shopping center in Buckhead.  The roughly 3,400 square foot store opened in 2019 in place of what had most recently been Maki Fresh, a quick serve Japanese restaurant.  The store's closure came as a surprise to shoppers and neighboring tenants alike, but was seemingly the result of the company, which was acquired by Hollywood Feed in February 2022, consolidating area operations with the existing Hollywood Feed at The Peach shopping center nearby.

A new BJ's Wholesale Club is slated to open "in late February" in McDonough.  The store, located at 245 Highway 81 West, close to the massive South Point development, will be the Marlborough, Massachusetts-based retailer's sixth store in Georgia, joining existing locations in Woodstock, Conyers, Cumming, East Point and Newnan. The new store is a little less than four miles from where the company closed a previous McDonough store in 2011.  In January 2011, the company closed three Atlanta area locations including those in McDonough, Austell and Norcross.  The former BJ's space in Henry Town Center is today occupied by HomeGoods, Old Navy, Urban Air and Ashley.

CTO Realty Growth, a retail REIT based in Daytona Beach, Florida, purchased The Collection at Forsyth for $96 million at the end of 2022.  The deal, which closed as of December 30, marks the third acquisition for the firm in metro Atlanta in just the past twelve months.  In July 2022 CTO purchased Madison Yards in Reynoldstown for $80.2 million and in December 2021 purchased Phase 1 of The Exchange at Gwinnett in Buford for $34 million.  Both the Reynoldstown and Buford properties were Fuqua Development projects.  The firm's first foray into metro Atlanta came in February 2020 when it acquired Perimeter Place in Dunwoody, later renamed Ashford Lane.

Publix, which opened several new stores in metro Atlanta in 2022, will open another new one in just a few days in Covington.  The new store at 12701 Town Center Drive is slated to open Wednesday January 11.  Lakeland, Florida-based Publix still has a number of other additional Atlanta area stores that it plans to open including those destined for Phase 2 of The Interlock in West Midtown and Summerhill Station near the old Turner Field in Atlanta.

Any idea of what is coming (work is being done) at the former Burger King (and others before BK) at the corner of Buford HWY and Samples Rd in Cumming? It’s been empty for a pretty long time.

It's a shame you have to post the admonition. Love your site and the information you share.

The restaurant that moved from Sandy Springs is Canton Cook (or Canton Cook II). Canton Cooks is still alive and well in Sandy Springs.

Both good restaurants.

Twenty five dollars for a hamburger at Nowak's? I don't think so. Good luck.

Any idea what's going on in the parking lot of Northlake Mall? In front of Macy's. A section has been "fenced in", as if a new outbuilding might be happening there.

Sad to see Pet People close, I went in the Friday after Christmas and the place was stripped of all merchandise, so I knew it had to to be the end. We loved using their dog bath station, which Hollywood Feed doesn’t have, so I hope they’ll consider adding that.

United Community does have a branch at Embry Hills which is only outside the perimeter by (literally) a matter of yards.

What's up with the name "Pet People"? I would have thought it was a pet supplies store.

@Anon Re: Northlake,

That outparcel will serve as a relocation of Lenscrafters plus another "small shop" space that could be small restaurant or service use.

Northlake is a goldmine. Lenscrafters and the vape shop are going to kill it.

But that is the price.

Northlake used to have a Goldmine! The arcade!
