[EXCLUSIVE] Whataburger Finds First ITP Location

Atlanta is getting a Whataburger! Yes, Atlanta, Atlanta, like inside the perimeter with an Atlanta address, Atlanta.  A job posting for a “Restaurant Team Leader” for a Whataburger at 2955 Cobb Parkway, Suite 910 (Akers Mill Square) was recently posted to the Whataburger website.  A company representative confirmed to ToNeTo Atlanta that a new Whataburger will open there “by year-end” but offered no further details.

[EXCLUSIVE] Brookhaven Getting New Self Storage Facility

A new self-storage facility is planned for 2719 Buford Highway in Brookhaven.  The facility, which will be primarily visible off I-85 south, is slated to replace an existing two story office building which was built in 1968.  Property records indicate the parcel is about 1.5 acres with the new facility slated to include 727 climate-controlled self-storage units in five stories and approximately 100,000 square feet.

[ALERT] Shipley Do-Nuts Has Arrived in Georgia

Shipley Do-Nuts, makers of gourmet, made-fresh-daily do-nuts, has finally brought its do-nuts to Georgia.  Metro Atlanta's first franchise opened March 20th at 3225 Keith Bridge Road in Cumming in Forsyth County. The shop is locally owned and operated by Oziel “Ozzie” Rodriguez and his wife Brenda, who also own Coal Mountain Package Store and Palapas Bar and Grill, also in Forsyth County. 

[UPDATE] Kroger Looks to Build Long Delayed Lawrencevile Store

Years after the store seemed to have been shelved indefinitely, newly released planning documents suggest that a new Kroger planned for 1006 Martins Chapel Road in Lawrenceville may finally be getting close to breaking ground.  The store, announced in 2016, was to have opened in 2017, but was postponed for several years as Kroger re-evaluated its store openings.  If and when the new store does open, it would mark one the first completely new Kroger stores in metro Atlanta in more than four years.

[EXCLUSIVE] Costa Coffee Brewing Soon in Brookhaven

Brookhaven is getting a new coffee shop!  Costa Coffee, a U.K.-based coffee purveyor, has secured space in TOWN Brookhaven for what will be one of the chain's first American locations.  The new shop will open in a roughly 1,300 square foot space between 26 Thai Kitchen & Bar and Tropical Smoothie Cafe.  The corner space the coffee shop will occupy has in years past played host to several other food & beverage related concepts but never a true coffee shop.

It's far from what many would consider "metro Atlanta," but another new Whataburger is coming to town.  Real estate materials indicate that new locations of both Whataburger and Chick-fil-A are planned as part of an overall 10 acre development at the northeast corner of Winder Highway and Atlanta Highway in Oakwood, near Flowery Branch.

Phoenix, Arizona-based Sprouts Farmers Market (NASDAQ:SFM), which entered the Atlanta market in 2014, announced March 2 it plans to close a total of 11 stores by mid-year.  The company did not reveal the stores slated for closure, only saying that they would include those in California, Florida, Georgia, Texas and Washington.

Bits & Bites

Raising Cane's will open their first metro Atlanta location tomorrow, March 16.  The restaurant, located at 3485 Braselton Highway in Dacula is located between Arby's and Starbucks and was built on the site of a demolished former BB&T bank.  The Baton Rouge-born chain has plans for at least ten locations in metro Atlanta in years to come.  ToNeTo Atlanta has previously reported on two other confirmed locations including those coming to Buford and Woodstock

[UPDATE] Metro Burger Joint to be Reborn as Buffalo Luke's

On the heels of news last month that Cheeseburger Bobby restaurants in Sandy Springs and Peachtree Corners have closed comes news that a third location, in Kennesaw, has also closed.  That said, as opposed to the uncertainty of the two aforementioned locations, the Kennesaw outpost is currently undergoing renovations to reopen as Buffalo Luke's, a restaurant specializing in wings, burgers and tenders.

[UPDATE] Local Developer Purchases Historic Church, Plans to Repurpose it

A local developer with a knack for adaptive reuse has inked a deal for perhaps their most exciting project yet.  Local real estate firm Healey Weatherholtz Properties recently purchased the Northside Park Baptist Church property (1881 Howell Mill Road) and plans to repurpose the property into a mix of boutiques, offices, event space and food & beverage offerings with a "world-class patio."  

[EXCLUSIVE] Whataburger to Debut Latest Atlanta Area Restaurant This Month

Whataburger is slated to debut their latest restaurant March 27 20 23 in Buford, according to a manager at an updated press release from the restaurant.  The new restaurant will be located in an outparcel of The Exchange at Gwinnett, a new mixed use development just off exit 115 of I-85 in Gwinnett County.  

[UPDATE] Mrs. Winner's to Reopen Shuttered Sandy Springs Restaurant

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”  With that in mind we share news that Mrs. Winner's Chicken & Biscuits will later this spring reopen its former location on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.  The restaurant - located at 8550 Roswell Road - first opened as a Mrs. Winner's in late 2020 before closing after about two years in late 2022.

[UPDATE] Sandy Springs Shopping Center Gets New Name, Upgrades

Just over a year after changing hands, a Sandy Springs shopping center has gotten a new name.  The center formerly known as Sandy Springs Gateway has been rechristened "Chastain Market," according to new signage recently installed at the Sprouts Farmers Market-anchored center.  

[EXCLUSIVE] Popular Intown Barbecue Joint Opening New Location

D.B.A. Barbecue, a Virginia-Highland mainstay for more than a decade, is opening a new location.  A newly created Instagram page indicates the opening of a new restaurant about ten miles away. The new address, 4540 East Ponce de Leon Avenue in Clarkston, is a former Taco Bell/KFC where it's unclear if D.B.A. will make use of the former drive-thru.

[EXCLUSIVE] Sprouts to Shutter Single Suburban Atlanta Store

Phoenix, Arizona-based Sprouts Farmers Market (NASDAQ:SFM), which entered the Atlanta market in 2014, announced earlier this week it plans to close a total of 11 stores by mid-year.  The company did not reveal the stores slated for closure, only saying that they would include those in California, Florida, Georgia, Texas and Washington.  ToNeTo Atlanta has confirmed with local sources that the Atlanta area Sprouts slated for closure is located at 2220 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, Suite 200, in Duluth.  

[UPDATE] Belk is Bringing New Outlet Store to Georgia

Belk is bringing one of their first outlet stores to Georgia.  The Charlotte-based department store will in April open a new "Belk Outlet" at Arbor Place Mall in Douglasville.  The new outlet is replacing a traditional Belk store that the company closed as of February 28 to renovate and reopen in April as an outlet.

[UPDATE] Posh Buckhead Road Getting Unlikely New Neighbor

Work has begun to transform a former Buckhead nursery into an upscale self-storage facility.  Atlanta-based Stein Investment Group won over Tuxedo Park area neighbors this past spring with its plans to open a new Space Shop self-storage at 10 Blackland Road, behind the Landmark Diner in Chastain Park.  The facility will sit on 2.4 acres and feature about 700 climate-controlled self-storage units.

[UPDATE] Once A Chain of Nearly 300, Zoes Kitchen Now Gone Entirely From Georgia

After more than a decade in business serving the local community, Zoes Kitchen closed its last remaining Atlanta area restaurant on Wednesday, March 1.  The restaurant, located just off the Emory University campus at 1385 Oxford Road, opened in 2013, but following Cava's 2018 acquisition of Zoes, will now, like so many other former Zoes, be converted into a Cava.  

[OPENING ALERT] Raising Cane's Officially Confirms First Metro Atlanta Opening

ToNeTo Atlanta reported in January that Raising Cane's planned to open their new Dacula restaurant March 9.  Unfortunately, the opening has been delayed, but only by a week, with the Raising Cane's website now officially promoting a debut on Thursday March 16!  

[EXCLUSIVE] Breakfast Chain Looks to Supplant Longstanding Kennesaw Restaurant

First Watch (NASDAQ: FWRG) has a second new Cobb County location in the works.  The breakfast and lunch chain, which should open its new East Cobb restaurant later this month, also plans to open a new location in Kennesaw.  The new Kennesaw outpost would replace TGI Fridays at 840 Cobb Place Boulevard, just off Ernest Barrett Parkway in an outparcel of Cobb Place shopping center.

[EXCLUSIVE] Florida Taco Joint Scores Sites for Atlanta Expansion

A Florida-based taco joint is pushing forward with an Atlanta expansion.  Capital Tacos, which got its start in the Tampa Bay community of Land O' Lakes in 2013, has secured sites for its first three locations in the greater Atlanta area.  The chain is currently only in Florida, and Atlanta will be one of the chain's first expansion markets.
