[EXCLUSIVE] Shake Shack Seeks Space in Second Suburban Shopping Center

ToNeTo Atlanta has learned that Shake Shack (NYSE: SHAK) is looking to open a new location in Johns Creek.  The new restaurant, planned for 5805 State Bridge Road, would be built in an outparcel of the existing Hobby Lobby-anchored Medlock Corners shopping center.  The Shack Shack restaurant would be 3,500 square feet and feature a drive-thru.

The property's owner, Atlanta-based Willow Capital Partners, is seeking two variances from the City of Johns Creek to push the project forward.

VC-23-0002: To reduce the number of required parking spaces from 355 to 304

VC-23-0003: To eliminate landscape strips adjacent to internal property lines.

The new Shake Shack would be situated on State Bridge Road alongside an existing outparcel Arby's which opened in January 2018 in a converted former Pollo Tropical restaurant.  Landlord Willow Capital Partners has in recent years added several other businesses to new outparcels including Discount Tire and most recently, "Shops at Medlock Corners,"  a 6,200-square-foot retail strip center home to Jersey Mike’s, Ideal Dental and ATI Physical Therapy.  Willow Capital sold the three tenant center April 6 for $4.3 million.

Shake Shack, which got its start as a food cart in New York's Madison Square Park in 2004, has today grown into a publicly traded company with about 450 locations worldwide.

In metro Atlanta, the company currently operates eight units: Buckhead Village District in Buckhead, Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody, EDGE on the Atlanta BeltLine in Old Fourth Ward, Concourse A of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Lenox Square in Buckhead, Alpharetta Crossing in Alpharetta, Piedmont Park, and their newest location at Westside Provisions District in West Midtown.

The company opened its first drive-thru in December 2021 and debuted the model in metro Atlanta in February 2022 when the company opened in a converted Burger King in Alpharetta.

There are currently only about a dozen Shake Shack drive-thru locations but the chain plans to open 10-15 in 2023 along with another 60 or so non drive thru units.  If all goes according to plan, Shake Shack will likely enter 2024 with more than 500 units worldwide.

I wish they would come to Gwinnett

They didn’t reuse the Alpharetta Burger King building, just the site. They did a complete tear down and built a new building specifically for Shake Shake.

They are Soo overrated! Expensive. Good burger at best!

Anyone else underwhelmed by Shake Shack? I've only been a few times to the Perimeter location but each time, the service was painfully slow and while the burger was good, I thought it was more of a slider than a full burger size. for the price, it just isn't worth it for me. I can't imagine how they can operate with a drive through since it takes so long to fill orders in the restaurant.

I have tried Shake Shack a few times and I do not get the hype. The burgers and fries are just average and not worth the prices they charge.

I agree they are sort of overrated. Let's be honest often the love of a certain restaurant has less to do with the food and more our emotional attachment. If your someone who thinks it's cool to eat at a hipster burger joint associated with NY you'll love it. If you're a Texan or just want to be you'll love Whataburger. If you're a lifelong Atlantan you'll swear The Varsity is the greatest. However, all these places are just decent fast-food joints nothing more or less. Dang, suddenly I've got a craving for chili dogs, onion rings and frosted orange.

Just go to Culver's or Freddy's. You'll thank me later.

Ham makes a great point. As a native Atlantan, I am a big Varsity fan, but would certianly never claim the food was anything special. I always tell friends from out of town that we're going for the experience. And it is a fun experience - from the ridiculously long counter with dozens of registers to the way they move the line with all the shouting and lingo, and then the school style desk chairs in the different TV rooms, it's just kind of unique. But it's location driven for sure - no nbeed to ever visit the Gwinnett, Dawson or Alpharetta locations!

I like to go to In-n-Out even though I think the food is below par (burgers decent but fries are some of the worst). But that atmosphere can be recreated. The Varsity is pretty unique to its location. I haven't done the car hop thing in decades, but used to go alot with my family when I was a kid. Then we would go ice skating at the Omni. Good memories of both. They do still have the car hops, right?

Sorry, no car hops and no Varsity Jr.

The “workers” in that part of town are very substandard!!! Gets better as you move away from the city…..trooof!

“More of a slider…” What are you talking about? The precooked weight is 4oz, same as a Royale with cheese.

Shake shack (NY) is like target. They (shake shack and it's customers) think they are better than others and just because the presentation is better that means higher quality! ... Well the same bag of kettle chips is the same bag sold in Walmart ya fool. It's at a better price. In this economy that saving can go towards gas. You can get a better burger else where. Culver's, Whataburger, Freddy's, local restaurants etc. Fast casual restaurants like 'the shack' is suppose to save you money by giving you high quality and you do the service. 'The shack' provides good quality at a Krystal proportion, 2-3 times the McDonald's price and you still provide the self serve. And you leave hungry. Ridiculous. I'm going to laugh when they start to struggle and start providing coupons. This is another cupcake fad. Imagine when Whataburger opens up close by ... LoL expect tears!

what was the point of any of that?

Nobody at the counter will take your order-you have to use the self-serve tablet. The staff burns the burgers on the grill and could care less. If I want overcooked burgers I can get that at McDonalds at half the price.
