[EXCLUSIVE] HomeGoods Sibling Brand Finally Entering Georgia

It's been nearly six years since we first reported on TJX's then new concept store, Homesense.  Now, with forty nine stores open and several more in the immediate pipeline, we've confirmed news of an Atlanta area store.  Although not yet present on the Homesense website, several real estate sources as well as others at the retailer confirm that a new Homesense is planned for Suwanee.  The new store will open in Johns Creek Town Center and could open as soon as the fall.

Located at 3630 Peachtree Parkway #201, the new Homesense would be nearly 24,000 square feet and open in place of what was most recently a Staples.  Homesense joins fellow anchors Kohl's, ULTA and Sprouts Farmers Market as well as Market by Macy's, a new concept store which joined the center last year in a converted former Stein Mart.

This is thus far the only Homesense location in the immediate pipeline for Georgia but additional outposts are no doubt being planned.  The company (NYSE: TJX)  recently debuted a pair of locations in the greater Charlotte, North Carolina area and already operates three stores in Florida.  Sibling brand HomeGoods, launched in 1992, today has nearly 900 locations nationwide including more than two dozen stores in the greater metro Atlanta area.  TJX has seemingly been pleased with the results of the Homesense expansion and is surely looking to see a longer term success than they saw with their ill-fated AJWright banner that was shuttered in 2010.

In the years since our original post, we visited a Homesense in Columbia, Maryland where it opened in place of a former Staples (A neighboring T.J. Maxx opened in place of a former Toys R Us.) The store is similar to Homegoods but has a greater focus on lighting and furniture, and less of a focus on small goods and food.

Recent and upcoming Bed Bath & Beyond, Tuesday Morning, Party City, Office Depot/OfficeMax, and other closures will bring to market important real estate for TJX as it continues to expand its Homesense brand.  In the case of many of the recent and upcoming closures, existing tenants were likely paying below market rents, making turning their spaces, especially to someone as sought after as a TJX brand, especially desirable to landlords.

Although TJX often likes situating its brands in the same center as one another, being in the same center as Market by Macy's and ULTA and across the street from a T.J. Maxx in Johns Creek Village likely made the former Staples space uniquely appealing.

Have you been to a Homesense store?  What is your favorite off-price retailer?  Where else in metro Atlanta would you like to see Homesense open?

I went to a Homesense in FL. It had such a fabulous array of furniture and other items for the home. It’s like HomeGoods with many of the same items but much larger with indoor and outdoor furniture including sofas, dining room sets and much more.

Metro Atlanta needs more quality affordable home products. I’m excited to hear that we will have another option to choose to purchase from. Welcome to Georgia! Have you considered the Dunwoody Perimeter Mall area?
