[EXCLUSIVE] Caribou Coffee Coming Back Strong With Several New (Suburban) Stores

ToNeTo Atlanta exclusively reported October 19 that Caribou Coffee was opening a new location in a former Burger King in Kennesaw.  The response to that news significantly exceeded our expectations and we are pleased to share news that the company has at least three more Atlanta area locations in the works.  The company's upcoming growth continues to focus on second generation and drive-thru enabled sites.

A new Caribou Coffee is planned for 12996 Alpharetta Highway in Milton where the coffee shop is backfilling a former Del Taco.  The Del Taco opened in early 2016 before abruptly closing in early 2020.

Another new Caribou is planned for a former Hardee's at 4360 Atlanta Highway in Loganville.  The Loganville restaurant was one of more than a dozen Georgia Hardee's shuttered earlier this year by bankrupt franchisee Summit Restaurant Holdings.

In Cumming, Caribou is opening at 580 Peachtree Parkway in new multi-tenant development not far from The Collection at Forsyth.  The coffee shop will occupy an 1,800 square foot endcap space with a drive-thru.

The company has thus far not responded to our request for comment on opening timeline(s), but the new locations mark the first new standalone Caribou Coffee shops in metro Atlanta in more than a decade, perhaps even two decades.

The Minnesota-based chain has in recent years closed more locations than it has opened in metro Atlanta with notable intown closures including along Roswell Road in Chastain Park, Piedmont Avenue and Monroe Drive in Midtown, North Druid Hills and LaVista Roads in Toco Hills, and Northside Parkway and West Paces Ferry Road in Buckhead, among others.

Caribou Coffee was in 2013 acquired by German private equity firm JAB Holding Company, a multi-billion dollar firm that also owns Panera Bread, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Peet's Coffee, Pret a Manger and Bruegger's Bagels, among other brands.

There are currently just six Caribou Coffee locations in metro Atlanta: Peachtree and Piedmont in Buckhead, 10th and Piedmont in Midtown, Peachtree Center and Truist Garden (Bridge Level) Downtown, and a pair of locations at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.  Of the six, only the Buckhead location is freestanding with a drive-thru.

Founded in 1992, as of September 26, 2023, Caribou Coffee had 329 company-owned stores, 139 "non-traditional" and 319 franchise locations in 11 countries.

Are you excited for the return of more Caribou Coffee shops to metro Atlanta?  Who do you think offers the best coffee in metro Atlanta? Where else would you like to see Caribou Coffee open?

Please share your thoughts below.

There is a great spot in Smyrna off Concord Rd opposite Burger Crush. It could even have a drive thru!

I would choose Caribou over Starbucks… enjoyed their previous locations in peachtree corners.

They are so much better than Starbucks
I worked for this company back when it had expanded outside of the perimeter and they take pride in their coffee and making sure that the employees are well educated on the products they serve. A lot goes into training to make sure you know about the coffees and their origins and the flavors you will taste. So glad to see them making a comeback outside the perimeter again. Best wishes to each and every location. I know myself will be frequently visiting the Loganville location. Can’t wait ❤️

There was a Caribou Coffee that also closed years ago on Ashford Dunwoody Road near the two former Post apartments that are in the area

Burnt down Krystal in Douglasville off Hwy 5 would be perfect, or the closed down O'Charleys outside of Arbor Place Mall.

There is a sign in front of the closed Burger King in Kennesaw off Barrett Parkway saying "Caliber Car Wash Coming Soon". Was it a different Burger King location that closed in Kennesaw?

Some people like coffee shops. Coffee shops and breakfast are one of my favorites. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s not warranted. I don’t like Burger King but I’m not going to pitch a fit because there’s a Burger King.

Not to mention they have all day breakfast , which we definitely need. They also have lunch as well.
