The owners of The General Muir took to Facebook Wednesday to announce the closure of their restaurant at City Springs in Sandy Springs. The restaurant, sibling of the original at The Point near Emory University, opened in January 2021 and never quite reached the business level needed to sustain the operation.
The restaurant's last day of service will be Sunday, September 29.
"We are sad to announce that the City Springs location of The General Muir will be closing. Our last service will be Sunday, September 29th. Many factors starting with and stemming from the pandemic have posed ongoing challenges to independent restaurants. While we had many fans and loyal customers, ultimately we simply did not get to the level of business we needed to overcome those challenges. We are passing our space along to a concept and operator that we hope will have broader appeal to this market."
The Sandy Springs restaurant, on which ToNeTo Atlanta first reported in August 2019, was a bit smaller than the flagship location near Emory, which opened in 2013, but still featured the same menu. Interestingly, the Sandy Springs restaurant was located in a part of Atlanta known to have a significant Jewish population so its closure and the owners' inability to attract a significant enough following is more than a bit puzzling.
ToNeTo Atlanta first got wind of the pending closure more than a year ago, but a request at that time for comment from Jennifer Johnson, co-owner of General Muir parent Rye Restaurants, went unanswered. Several real estate sources have told ToNeTo Atlanta in recent months that the space has been quietly marketed "within the Atlanta restaurant community for awhile".
"We are forever grateful to the many customers, friends, and neighbors who supported The General Muir at City Springs and to the many current and former team members who helped bring it to life. We are working to absorb into our other restaurants all staff members who wish to do so."
The original General Muir and TGM Bread at The Point remain open as do Fred's Meat & Bread and Yalla at Krog Street Market, Wood's Chapel BBQ in Summerhill and West Egg Cafe at Westside Provisions District in West Midtown.
Are you surprised that The General Muir did not succeed in Sandy Springs? What is your favorite place for brunch in metro Atlanta? What kind of restaurant would you most like to see open in place of The General Muir in Sandy Springs.

This city is so poor at supporting restaurants and businesses. Don't fall in love with anything here because it will inevitably close.
For whatever reason, restaurants in Sandy Springs struggle except for Rumi’s Kitchen.
So sad to hear. Even though TGM in Sandy Springs stopped dinner service a while ago (which was excellent when available), I was gutted to learn that they are closing this location. Everything I had there was always top notch.
It's good but quite expensive!
This is crazy! We loved this place the menu is outstanding! Unfortunately the hostess always made people wait even though there were plenty of tables.
Never had a good meal.
I’m not surprised. It’s expensive and for some reason, the food didn’t taste the same as the GM near Emory.
The picture makes it look like it has the personality and character of a storage facility.
Probably because most of the restaurants are utter trash and garbage.
I’m sorry for the employees and the neighbors that liked the restaurant. I hope City Springs eventually gets the right equation, I think it still has a ways to go.
I think Zafron and Kaiser’s are both wonderful restaurants in Sandy Springs as well as Rumi’s!
The restaurant was quite comfortable and had excellent food!
Simply put the selection not appealing and not actually a deli
The location was too off the beaten path. Move it to the heart of Buckhead and this won’t happen! Postino was smart…most of the neighborhood places on Roswell INSIDE the perimeter last!
Because Rumis is on Roswell and is actually really good!
The Sandy Springs location is expensive and served smaller portions than the original location
I forgot it was ever there. Blame it on poor city planning. The layout of that area doesn’t work. there’s just not a whole lot going on there except for the performing art center, which is fine, but that’s about it. Our current economy is so bad now that people can’t afford to go to these expensive restaurants. And if you are going out to spend a wad on dining, you’re going to go to an area where there’s a lot of other things happening, other establishments, so you can walk around and enjoy the scene.
So sad to hear this - the food was wonderful! But, it was expensive, and the parking situation there is bad. Often when I went for lunch there would be a long wait, but later in the afternoon it always seemed empty. And it's just way too expensive for a takeout lunch, so not sure if they were able to make up sales through takeout. Very disappointed to hear this though as the food was outstanding! Hopefully the City of Sandy Springs will help future tenants with better signage for the restaurants there and more free parking.
It’s the food, not the location. The Select and Flower Child are doing great
Mirko Pasta is my favorite 🇮🇹
Sad it's going -- just because I don't like it when a business needs to close.
Yet I went there a couple times and it just wasn't great and was expensive. I really like the one near the CDC, however, so not sure why this one was different.
it beez about the ‘workers’ in most cases….
The food was excellent, but the space was uninviting from the outside & the parking sucks so terribly bad.
Ray's on the River, Hudson Grill, Bawarchi Biryani, El Azteca, Fellini's Pizza, Three Dollar Cafe, Porto Brasil (moved locations), Henri's, Nori Nori, La Petite Maison, Canton Cooks, and more have all been here over a decade and are still going strong. Rumi's is not the only one doing well.
Honestly
There are better Jewish delis in /near sandy springs I prefer Grubys new you deli. Food is better
Also, C&S Seafood.
It wasn’t that good and expensive.Sides were extra.Wait staff was slow. What else can I say, only went there once.
Or Hello Deli! Salvador’s Deli is good too
I was a loyal customer at the Emory Pointe location so was very excited when I discovered this location, upon my move to Sandy Springs. However, the quality and service at this location was NOT THE SAME! The food tasted like leftovers. The staff were not pleasant and they were often out of main item…even bagels. I wanted to support this location but my experiences were often disappointing.
Things took a turn for the worse once the General died and Mrs. Muir started talking to that ghost.
Good food, good people. I found parking too difficult.
I still miss the oldies but goodies: The Brickery, the Japanese restaurant next to it, and Fresh to go and Ippolitos. Good food, good prices. Happy to see Roasters still going strong!
A deli?? Although I never went, I thought it was a Chinese restaurant
