Struggling build-your-own pizza chain MOD Pizza plans to close at least one more location in metro Atlanta. The Cumming restaurant, located in an outparcel of Cumming Marketplace (908 Buford Highway) opened in July 2021 and is due to close after dinner service tonight, December 19, according employees at the restaurant.
Around the same time as the Elite acquisition, MOD Pizza CEO Beth Scott updated her LinkedIn profile to reflect that she was no longer with the brand, indicating that her seven-month tenure with the pizza chain had ended. Industry veteran Scott had come to MOD to replace co-founder Scott Svenson, who had moved to an executive chairman role.
Reports in July indicated that MOD Pizza had shuttered 44 units, primarily company-owned, since the start of the year. The company has this year already closed restaurants in Chamblee, East Cobb and Buford. (A new Dave's Hot Chicken is opening in place of the former Buford location.)
The Cumming restaurant is located in a three unit building that also includes a Buffalo Wild Wings GO and a Starbucks.
MOD, which stands for "made on demand," was founded in Seattle in 2008, and today includes 490 locations across 28 states.
Southern Pie, LLC, a franchise group led by Robbie Hill and his daughter Kimberly Hill Hayden, owns MOD stores in Georgia and Alabama. Southern Pie's first MOD opened in 2017 in Kennesaw Marketplace in Kennesaw. Following the closures, MOD's remaining locations in Georgia are Decatur, Dawsonville, Kennesaw, and Augusta.
Are you surprised to hear of MOD Pizza's closure in Cumming? What is your favorite quick-serve pizza eatery? What would you like to see open in place of MOD Pizza in Cumming?

Dinner service lol
Not surprised. We had a Your Pie nearby that was much better until the franchise closed. All of their locations. Marketplace is difficult to get in and out of and every time we were in there it was freezing cold. I know people complain about that shopping center being hard but it doesn't seem to impact Starbucks! It is interesting to see what will happen with the space given that I know you Canes is opening next door
In addition to reason of corporate financial condition strained, this location had very bad employees with no personality to interact with customers and you would continually hear sensitive, personal conversations going on between employees on make line. Very bad goth attire and personal no uniform dress amongst many employees, as well. Thankfully everyone always wearing gloves.
