[CLOSURE ALERT] Froyo Franchise Menchie's Shutters at Toco Hills

Menchie's Frozen Yogurt at Toco Hills shopping center has closed.  The froyo shop opened at the Publix-anchored center in 2010 and closed "about a week ago," according to multiple ToNeTo Atlanta readers.  Given the large Jewish community in the area, the shop had offered kosher froyo, but it's not listed on the Atlanta Kashruth Commission, so they may no longer have been "certified kosher."

The first Menchie's opened in the Los Angeles suburb of Valley Village in 2007.  In the years since, the company has grown through franchising to a global footprint of more than 500 stores.  Menchie's was one of several froyo franchises to explode during the FroYo boom between 2007 and 2011, but it, too, has experienced some challenges.  Company CEO Amit Kleinberger even went "undercover" in 2013 in the hit CBS reality show "Undercover Boss" to pull back the curtain and improve the business.

Frozen yogurt, very much a "fad franchise," has seen several local upstarts as well as national brands crash and burn in their metro Atlanta growth efforts.

Cowlick's Yogurt & Floats, Swirlin' Twirlin', Froyolo, and Yoreka, all multi-unit local concepts, closed all of their locations.  Even The Yogurt Tap, our local favorite, gave up the ghost in 2016 in Decatur.  National players like Yogurtland, Pinkberry, Red Mango, and Swirll each left the state entirely.  ToNeTo Atlanta has over the years chronicled the so-called "fro-yo meltdown."

The Toco Hills location was once one of more than a dozen in the Atlanta area, but today only six remain in business locally.  Franchised locations have in years past closed at Peachtree Station in Chamblee, Avenue East Cobb in East Cobb, Avenue West Cobb in West Cobb, Sandy Plains Centre in East Cobb, Paces Ferry Plaza in Buckhead, Kennesaw Marketplace in Kennesaw, and Cumming Marketplace in Cumming, among others.

Online records suggest franchisee Cooper Jobe was the owner of the Chamblee and Toco Hills stores that have closed as well as one of the remaining area locations at Tuxedo Festival in Buckhead.

Toco Hills owner Edens is not yet marketing the 2,244 square foot space for lease but likely will soon.

Are you surprised to see Menchie's close at Toco Hills?  Where do you currently go to satisfy your froyo fix?  What would you like to see open in place of Menchie's at Toco Hills?

Please share your thoughts below.

The whole "pay by the weight" aspect always ended up in disaster with kids and adults woefully underestimating how much they're getting.

I hate the fact that it closed and hate it when any retailer closes. Retail isn’t for the faint of heart. I wonder if the other place on N. Druid that opened 6 months ago, was the final blow. i never saw any customers at Menchies.

I’m sad that it didn’t work out. I actually like the ability to fill my own cup and put on toppings. Plus, I just like soft serve versus the scoopable stuff. The probablem with this location for the last several years was the upkeep. It was always dirty, the machines were always freezing up and it was dark and unwelcoming. If you look at their ratings- so many folks only gave 1 star. I’ve been to other yogurt shops like this that are clean, have a better pricing system and everything was fresh. This Menchie’s location closed because it was a mess.

The problem with menchies is that they let that store get so run down. Ive always enjoyed going there and I prefer frozen yogurt. The last year the machines were never working quite right. It was dirty. The choices became limited. It was like they just stopped caring.

The Froyo fad is over.

I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. We liked going and would put up with the filthy, unkept premises. Never saw that many people in there...

Always dirty and some very disinterested teenager working the cash register. Last time I went in there it smelled like cat litter. Good riddance.

Place smelled so bad that I swore it was a kennel.
