Dollar Tree in December closed locations on Metropolitan Parkway in southwest Atlanta and on Johnson Ferry Road in Brookhaven. No reason was provided for either store closure and there is not yet word on what, if anything, may replace either store.
Sweet Spot Cookies has opened in place of Ali's Cookies in Ashford Lane. The cookie shop is no longer kosher and was recently sold to new owners by founder Jeff Rosengarten. Rosengarten also sold the Ali's Cookies in Emory Village (which is still an Ali's Cookies) but continues to operate the original Ali's Cookies on Johnson Ferry Road in East Cobb.
Casual Israeli restaurant Rina closed in late December after about a two years at Avalon in Alpharetta. Restaurateur Tal Baum and her Oliva Restaurant Group opened the roughly 3,300 square foot restaurant in November 2023 in a space originally occupied by Goldberg's Bagel. The original Rina at the Ford Factory Lofts along the BeltLine remains open as do Baum's other restaurants: Carmel at Buckhead Village District, Atrium in Ponce City Market, and Italian cafe and shop Bella Alimentari, also at Ponce City Market.
Once high-flying eco shoe brand Allbirds (NASDAQ: BIRD) also closed its Avalon store. The former D2C (Direct to Consumer) darling has struggled to "find its footing" (pun intended) in brick & mortar retail and last year closed several stores and enacted a 1-for-20 reverse stock split to bring the company back into compliance with the NASDAQ. The Avalon store opened in May 2022 in place of lululemon which had relocated to a larger space in the project. Allbirds' other Atlanta location at Ponce City Market in the Old Fourth Ward remains open.
Buon Fornello Cafe & Bottega has closed in Publix at Perimeter, a Publix-anchored center at the corner of Hammond Drive and Peachtree Dunwoody Road in Sandy Springs. The small Italian cafe opened in the roughly 1,000 square foot space at 1100 Hammond Drive in November 2019 and quietly closed in recent weeks, according to locals in the area.
Following the introduction of the dual format in 2022, a Jimmy John's sandwich shop was added to an existing Dunkin' in Tucker. Both the sandwich and doughnut brands are owned by Atlanta-based Inspire Brands, which first tested the combo format in the lobby of their Sandy Springs headquarters in February 2022. The dual shop is operated by the existing Dunkin' franchisee and allows the operator to better leverage his existing location and infrastructure to appeal to additional diners and day-parts. The combined shop is located at 4092 Lawrenceville Highway, adjacent to where Burger King closed their longstanding restaurant in December.
In Johns Creek, a new Dunkin' is coming to an outparcel of the Publix-anchored Abbots Village shopping center. The new coffee shop is coming to an outparcel along Jones Bridge Road that once housed Bridgeport Carpets but was demolished last year. According to planning documents, the ground up Dunkin' will be 1,982 square feet.
City Barbeque opened their newest Atlanta area location January 15 in Acworth. The new restaurant, on which ToNeTo Atlanta first reported in February 2024, is located at 3574 Cobb Parkway Northwest, and joins other existing Atlanta area locations of the Dublin, Ohio-based chain in Sandy Springs, Buford, Snellville, Decatur, Woodstock, McDonough, and Johns Creek.
Potpourri, a women's clothing boutique in City Walk shopping center (227 Sandy Springs Place) in Sandy Springs, is closing after nearly 50 years in business. Potpourri, which first opened in Roswell in 1976 and has over the years moved to Sandy Springs, Buckhead, and then back to Sandy Springs, is closing permanently with owner Julie Routenberg opting to retire. The store is currently liquidating all in-stock merchandise ahead of its upcoming closure.
Big Dave's Cheesesteaks in recent weeks closed its four-year-old eatery at Peachtree Pavilion (6035 Peachtree Road), the H Mart-anchored shopping center in Doraville. The restaurant, then the second overall for restaurateur Derrick Hayes, opened November 14, 2020, and reportedly closed in late December without warning or notice to patrons. Hayes, who got his start operating from within a Dunwoody-area Shell gas station, opted to close his "Flagship" Forsyth Street location in Downtown Atlanta following damage from last summer's water main break. A replacement restaurant - 300 Marietta Street - occupies a former Waffle House and opened January 18. There are other Atlanta area locations in Forest Park, Lawrenceville, and at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Sweet Charlie's has closed at Buckhead Court in Chastain Park. The Philadelphia-based rolled ice cream franchise opened at the Superica-anchored center along Roswell Road in 2017 and closed at the end of 2024, according to a source in the area. The 1,300 square foot space is actively being marketed for lease by property owner Regency Centers. (ToNeTo Atlanta exclusively reported in November that Piece of Cake is moving to the Buckhead Court.) Other Atlanta area locations of Sweet Charlie's remain open in McDonough and Roswell. Former Sweet Charlie's franchisee John Martin exited the business in 2020 and now owns four Club Pilates franchises, including the newest, which opened in Chastain Park's Roswell Wieuca Shopping center this past December.
A third location of Vietnamese eatery Anh's Kitchen is coming to Toco Hills. The locally owned restaurant is opening in place of Duck Donuts, the fresh made doughnut franchise which closed in the roughly 1,800 square foot space in early 2023. The original Anh's Kitchen opened at the Viewpoint condo building along Peachtree Street in Midtown in November 2017. A second location was added along Jesse Hill Jr. Drive near the Municipal Market in 2023. The restaurant is owned by husband and wife Pete and Tram Anh Nguyen.
Also at Toco Hills, GameStop closed their store January 18. The 2,000 square foot space is located between junior anchors Pet Supermarket and Iron Age Korean Steakhouse. The once meme stock phenomenon has struggled to keep up with changes in tastes and preferences in how people shop and use its products. The company has in recent years also closed stores on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs and on Piedmont Road in Buckhead. That said, the company continues to have a significant presence in metro Atlanta with stores at Lenox Square, Perimeter Mall, Cumberland Mall, Edgewood Retail District, and Camp Creek Marketplace in East Point, among others.
Santa Lucia Brazilian Steakhouse closed as of December 29 after eight years in Buford. The restaurant, located in Mall of Georgia Crossing (3185 Woodward Crossing Boulevard) opened in 2016 in an outparcel space originally home to Atlanta Bread Co.
Urban Wings, a locally owned eatery focusing on wings and tenders, has closed its Upper Westside location at 2065 Defoors Ferry Road. The restaurant, which also features vegan wings and tenders, opened in 2021 in place of what had most recently been a Papa John's. Following its closure, Urban Wings remains open on Piedmont Avenue in Piedmont Heights and on Moreland Avenue in East Atlanta. The Urban Wings website indicates that new locations are planned for Avondale Estates and Suwanee.
In place of Urban Wings, Mission Burger Co., an Austin-based fast casual restaurant, intends to open, marking their arrival in the Atlanta market. The 100% plant-based restaurant was created by the same group that previously brought Austin residents "Mission Street Burrito," a plant-based burrito joint which closed in March 2023. According to the company's website, Mission Burger's menu features assorted plant-based entrees such as burgers, chicken, brisket, and mac n' cheese, as well as assorted fries and weekly specials. Like most plant-based restaurants, the prices seem higher than typical meat options with $17 burgers, $14 chicken sandwiches, $12 mac n' cheese, and perhaps the most alarming of them all, a $20 breakfast burrito!
Pea Ridge Kitchen + Bar, which was put up for sale this past September, seems to have closed. The restaurant closed "for the holidays" late last year and indicated it would reopen after the new year but never did. A source close to the Pea Ridge tells ToNeTo Atlanta that unable to find a buyer, the restaurant closed for good.
Secreto Southern Kitchen & Bar is now Piraye Kitchen & Bar at Brookleigh Market Place in Brookhaven at 3575 Durden Drive. Secreto first opened July 11, 2018, in Brookhaven. The original Secreto on Windward Parkway in Alpharetta remains open as Secreto. Piraye reportedly has the same owners of Secreto but now sports a more Mediterranean influenced menu.

Dollar Tree employees in Brookhaven told customers the shopping center didn’t renew the store’s lease as they didn’t want a older DT to be the immediate neighbor to the new under construction-coming soon Publix (former Kroger).
Sweet Spot not kosher anymore? They’ve lost my business.
The management company handling Cambridge Square has been pretty clear that they only want "prestigious" tenants. By by $Tree
There is a combo Jimmy john’s/dunkin/baskin Robbin’s in Duluth as well on Peachtree industrial Blvd.
For all of its perceived success, Avalon has had a decent amount of turnover.
