[ALERT] Trendy Sushi Spot Sukoshi Sleeps With the Fishes at Colony Square

Sukoshi, the fast casual sushi and poke eatery from Charleston's The Indigo Road Hospitality Group, has closed at Colony Square in Midtown.  The restaurant first opened in June 2019 and according to its website, officially closed as of January 1.

Located at 1201 Peachtree Street, suite #140, Sukoshi was located at the front of the mixed-use development alongside Sweetgreen and Brown Bag Seafood.

It's unclear if the the restaurant provided advance warning to staff or customers but the group did post a message to the Sukoshi website confirming the closure and thanking their team and loyal guests.

"Sukoshi redefined fast-casual dining, blending the precision of authentic sushi with a cheeky, on-the-go attitude. From vibrant sushi rolls to flavorful bowls and fresh salads, Sukoshi delivered bold, thoughtfully crafted bites for big appetites. Centrally located at Colony Square in Midtown Atlanta, it quickly became a go-to spot for lunch breaks, casual bites, and food lovers seeking high-quality sushi without the fuss.

Throughout its time in Atlanta, Sukoshi earned praise from Jezebel, which named it the Best Asian Restaurant in Atlanta and included it in their Top 100 Restaurants list. SCOOP highlighted Sukoshi as one of the best places to have lunch uptown, while Food & Wine celebrated it as offering one of the “Best Omakases in the Country Under $60.”

We are incredibly grateful to our team and to all of our loyal guests for making Sukoshi a part of your lives. Thank you for being part of our story."

The 2,000 square foot, counter-service restaurant specifically targeted those interested in a quick meal during lunch or for to-go ordering or delivery.  The restaurant also offered dim sum like dumplings, buns, specialty rolls, sashimi, and nigiri.

Designed by Powell, a Nashville-based architectural firm, Sukoshi sat about 30 people at communal tables and banquettes plus five more at its chef's table for Omakase service.

Sukoshi is meant to be fun, whether you’re enjoying product at your desk, on your couch, or at the restaurant,” Indigo Road partner Steve Palmer said in a press release at the time of its opening.  Whether the concept simply didn't work or its opening ahead of the pandemic and the resulting pivot to hybrid and work from home options are to blame is unknown.

For those in the area in the mood for sushi, the search is short with Mora Sushi a suitable alternative in Politan Row, the food hall at Colony Square.

Following its closure, The Indigo Road continues to operate several concepts around metro Atlanta including O-Ku, its upscale sushi restaurant in West Midtown, Indaco, its Italian restaurant along The BeltLine near Ponce City Market, and Oak Steakhouse and Colletta, another Italian restaurant, both at Avalon in Alpharetta.  The Indigo Road also operates The Vandiver, "a Main Street Tavern," at the Bridge Creek Inn in Clayon, Georgia.  The group in March 2020 closed another of their Italian concepts, Donetto, which was located on Brady Avenue in West Midtown.

Did you ever dine at Sukoshi?  Did the idea of elevated but fast-casual sushi interest you?  What would you like to see open in place of Sukoshi at Colony Square?

Yeah.... this never happened.

I remember when it first opened, they offered a 'lunch Omakase special' which got me very interested, thinking it would be a proper one-on-one sushi chef experience. Turned out to be your ususal variety plate that every sushi place made. It was a blatant bait-and-switch and got taken off the menu maybe two months later from what I assume were numerous complaints. Good riddance to bad sushi.

I work across the street and no one was ever in there. A few colleagues who had eaten there said the food was not good especially for the price point.

I live walking distance to Sukoski so I went there several times throughout their tenure. I don't like sushi so did not even try them for a few years, then reviewed the menu one day and found they made some very nice ramen (yet oddly didn't market this well). It was a nice space but never even half full in all my times dining there. It's a decent size space so I'm sure the numbers just weren't adding up for them given the rents in Colony Square.
