[ALERT] Kohl's to Close More than Two Dozen Stores, One in Metro Atlanta

Kohl’s  (NYSE: KSS) announced Thursday plans to close more than two dozen retail stores as well as a fulfillment center.  The closures, most of which will occur by April, include just one metro Atlanta store, but ten across California in addition to the San Bernardino E-commerce Fulfillment Center (EFC), which is due to close in May.

The company said it "continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base, [but] these specific locations were underperforming stores."

In metro Atlanta, the one store slated for closure is located at 2050 W Liddell Road in Duluth.  Most readers and locals will likely know this store better as being located along Satellite Boulevard across from Costco.  Gwinnett County property records indicate that the store opened in 2001 and sits on a bit over 10 acres.  The property last sold in August 2015 for roughly $16.5 million.

In total, the company plans to close 27 stores with another store in Spanish Fort, a city in Baldwin County, Alabama on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, among the other southern stores affected.

The closure in Duluth follows the shuttering of the adjacent Super Target in 2014.  In nearby Gwinnett Place, Macy's is due to close its full-line and furniture stores too, with its 23 acre property having been acquired by Gwinnett County this past December for $16.5 million.

Kohl's in 2016 closed eighteen other "underperforming" stores including Atlanta area stores at Northlake Mall in Tucker, Holcomb Bridge Road in Roswell and at The Mall at Stonecrest in Lithonia.

Prior to the announcement, Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-based Kohl's operated 1,150 stores across the country.  Following the closures, the company will continue to operate more than twenty stores across Georgia including those in East Cobb, Roswell, Austell, Snellville, Lawrenceville and Hiram.

Are you surprised to see Kohl's continue to close stores?  Where do you do the majority of your in-person retail shopping?  What would you most like to see open in the Duluth area?

Surprised they have lasted this long. A few years back the president was about to have her crown taken off. Use to frequent the Northlake store often.

I'm sad the Duluth location is closing. I shopped there periodically. As another person referenced it probably would have done better if it was where Burlington, Marshall's & TJ Maxx are located. I'm still sad about losing the Northlake Kohls. The next closest location for me is Snellville and I really think twice before I put myself in all that Snellville traffic.

Sad that this one is closing but figured it was headed that way with the spareness of inventory on shelves. Guess will have to go to Suwanee/Johns Creek now. That one is so different from the Duluth one and so much farther!

First the target closed up there now the kohls. Guessing that Costco across the street will be closing soon as well.

We have one in Hamilton Mill in Buford. I go there in a pinch of needed.

Costco’s do not close. Extremely profitable.

I used to shop at Kohls but their high prices and stupid “mark up to mark down” business model is outdated. And the Kohls cash, please. The only time in the last 8 years we visited was to return an Amazon purchase.

No surprise that anything around Gwinnett Place closes. Worked just north off of Satellite and that area was once very nice but is now kind of scary. I see no reason to go out there and fear Gwinnett Government will make it worse with more "affordable" housing.

That costco will never never close unless someone tries to redevelop that whole section of Gwinnett Place then they’d relocate. It is full everyday

Make it a movie studio like Shannon Mall

Target, kohls and Dave and busters all closed in recent years. See a pattern? No doubt Costco is the next to close.

Worse than that, Ham. Affordable housing to be linked later with marta via a large public transit hub.

Any other place in the world this would be a grand thing for the people. But certainly projects like this give us all pause because of the quality of people we have here and the people that simp for them.

Kohl’s used to be a great store. The quality of goods has declined for several years.

I am heartbroken. I shop at this Kohl's most of the time. My favorite store since Upton's closed years ago. If you keep taking stores away from Gwinnett Co it's no wonder the county shopping is going down hill. The same with the Roswell area too. Just disapppointing!!

Me too!

To January 12, 2025 at 2:36 PM, Gwinnett County is way more diverse than otp. There are families from all over the world here already.

But what is really telling: you yourself automatically equate bad behavior with "scary non white peoples" with no prompting in a cheap attempt to race bait.

So yes, you are a racist. And a simp.

Never was a big Kohl fan. The one here in Hiram is pretty. Not much competition out here. There is hey Ross which is used to pretty Junkie, Marshalls which is a pretty Junkie A Kohl's and a JCPenney. I prefer JCPenney their prices are much better. However, I am surprised they're closing them and I'm sad to see them then go just seems like everything is closing that years go by everybody keeps shopping online. I know it's easier to do and I'm guilty of it myself some but I try to go to the stores and not stay on Amazon all the time and buy things at the actual store that is part of the reason things are going out of business

To Ham: There are over 200 Korean businesses around the Gwinnett Place area and they're all thriving.

@January 13, 2025 at 10:18 AM And if you think about it and research Pew Statistics, Asians commit far fewer crimes than Whites per capita while also obtaining the highest education/test scores.

No bait, truth. This blog has a huge racist fan base which the owner tolerates and even loves.

I have elected to publish your post but please keep in mind commenting is not a right but a privilege.

I don't tolerate racism (if only I could show you all the comments that DON'T get published)

I don't love it and at the same time don't tolerate anonymous users pretending to know things they don't.

I'm sad to see them go, but only because of the few times a year I place a pick up order. I used to wear clothes from kohl's maybe between 2013-2017. In recent years, I've mostly just stacked coupons to get great deals on Ninja products and sometimes bedding. I think since the pandemic ended, there haven't been many opportunities to get amazing deals on electronics and appliances like before. As far as competitors, I only use jc Penney for towels and sheets but the quality has gone way down, they aren't really on sale anymore, and the locations are more spread out after their own closures. I'll maybe continue to shop at kohl's online if the deals are OK and I can get free shipping with low spend amount.

Thanks for all you do Eli. And don’t let these snowflakes get to you. Plus it’s not racist if the truth is being told. Keep your chin up. This is a great site.
