[EXCLUSIVE] Raising Cane's Planned For Property Once Home to Legacy Birmingham Restaurant

With their metro Atlanta expansion well underway, planning documents now confirm that Raising Cane's  is also entering the Birmingham market.  The popular chicken chain will be opening along US-280 in an area already home to several rival eateries.

The new Raising Cane's is slated to be built at 5301 US-280 where legacy Birmingham eatery Lloyd's operated for decades.  Lloyd's was a casual, family friendly establishment that first opened in 1937.  The restaurant closed in October 2023 with its roughly four acre property selling in December 2024 for $5 million.  The Lloyd's building was demolished this past January.

A new location of New Day Car Wash occupies one parcel - 5305 US-280 - and is slated to celebrate its grand opening June 19.

The new Birmingham Raising Cane's marks the Baton Rouge-based company's third location in Alabama, but just its second full-service location.  The company operates a non-traditional restaurant on the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa, which is currently closed for the summer break.  There is also a traditional Raising Cane's in Mobile.

In Birmingham, the new Raising Cane's will open less than a mile from a popular Chick-fil-A restaurant, as well as a new Super Chix that opened in part of a former Krispy Kreme last April.  The new restaurant is also about two miles from where Alabama-born Guthrie's, the business on which Raising Cane's is based, also operates.

The expansion of Raising Cane's follows the recent growth of Whataburger, another fast-food chain that has in recent years added new units in Birmingham, Hoover, Homewood, Opelika, and Pell City, among others.

ToNeTo Atlanta has reported in recent years that both chains are also expanding in metro Atlanta, too.  Whataburger currently operates 32 restaurants in Georgia with several more in the works.  For its part, Raising Cane's currently has seven units in Georgia open with several more - including those planned for Buckhead, West Midtown, Kennesaw and Dunwoody - in the works.

Are you excited to see Raising Cane's expand into Birmingham?  Do you think Raising Cane's chicken is better than its competitors?  Where else in Alabama would you like to see Raising Cane's open?

Please share your thoughts below.

I'd care more if this site was tonetobhm. Otherwise, people complain about coverage in places like Kennesaw complaining "THAT'S NOT ATLANTA." So I can only imagine how they feel about Birmingham.

This is swell for Raising Canes, but it ain't Atlanta.

And here I thought this was a ToNeToATLANTA page. My bad. There's plenty of happening in and around Atlanta this page doesn't even mention, but sure, let's talk about Birmingham. Honestly, who cares...? 🤷‍♂️

I’m glad they are putting something there. Lloyd’s was amazing and we all miss it, but we had the empty lot and weeds.

Well, as a Birmingham transplant living in Alpharetta, I certainly appreciate the Birmingham coverage. Now, let's hear about that Alpharetta Whataburger.....

There's a Cane's in Montgomery too.

If you care so much about Birmingham maybe it’s time to go back. Delta’s ready when you are

There's nothing going on in Atlanta except for chicken places. It's a dead city.

Wrong. Lol. There's plenty going on, you just don't know where to look. Lol. SMH.

You obviously didn't get his point. But I get it, reading comprehension isn't your forte. 🤦‍♂️
