ToNeTo Atlanta reported August 7 that seven Del Taco restaurants had suddenly closed around Georgia. The closures were reportedly the result of the recently bankruptcy of franchisee Matador Restaurant Group, which owned and operated a total of 22 units in Georgia and Alabama.
"The Company is actively working with the franchisee and within the bankruptcy proceeding to help support continued operations at the impacted restaurants while the franchisee’s reorganization efforts proceed," the statement said in part.
Now, Atlanta-based business brokerage The Shumacher Group is marketing seven former Del Taco restaurants for sublease, including six in Georgia and one in Opelika, Alabama. According to the listing, the units are "available individually or as a package of all units."
The brokerage is marketing the following restaurants for sublease:
1935 Cobb Parkway N., Kennesaw
745 Chastain Rd. Bldg 200, Kennesaw
9775 Hwy 92, Woodstock
1535 Hwy 20 W., McDonough
1714 Hwy 138, Conyers
4525 Jimmy Lee smith Pkwy, Hiram
3065 Pepperell Parkway, Opelika, AL (This restaurant just opened February 28, 2024)
Notably absent from the list are locations in Riverdale (6791 GA-85) and Morrow (6705 Jonesboro Road), which we included in our August 7 report. Both locations have, however, been removed from the Del Taco website and are marked "permanently closed" on Google.
Among the Georgia Del Taco restaurants that remain open are those in Tucker, Smyrna, Lawrenceville, Snellville, and Gainesville. The Del Taco on Cobb Parkway in Kennesaw closed in May. Another Del Taco at 109 Banks Road in Fayetteville also closed earlier this year. The Lake Forest, California-based chain has now closed more than a dozen restaurants in Georgia over the past several years. The chain previously shuttered units in Buford, Milton, East Cobb, and Loganville. The company in late 2019 closed a unit along Mansell Road in Roswell after only nine months in business.
The Buford unit is now home to local Chinese eatery 12 Lunar, Milton is now a Caribou Coffee, East Cobb is now a FIVE GUYS, Loganville is now a Chase Bank, while Roswell currently operates as Mashawi, a local Mediterranean restaurant.
Summit Restaurant Holdings closed more than a dozen Hardee's restaurants in Georgia in April 2023 ahead of their own Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. Most of the former Hardee's restaurants in metro Atlanta have since been replaced by other restaurants including Captain D's, IHOP, Caribou Coffee, Dunkin', Tim Horton's, and Pollo Campero.
Are you surprised that Del Taco closed so many Georgia restaurants? What would you like to see open in place of the newly shuttered Del Taco restaurants? What is your favorite quick-serve Mexican chain?

So there are only 5 Del Taco's left in the state? That is awful as just a matter of time before they abandon the state again.
Can't say surprised. If Del Taco corporate has made any advertising effort to support the restaurants, I have never seen it. The average Georgian probably thinks Del Taco and Taco Bell are one and the same.
No, those are most the metro units but there are a total of 12 still operating in the state.
There used to be a location many years ago at the corner of Peachtree Industrial Blvd and Ashford Dunwoody road. It was in business for many years, probably due to the manufacturing business that was right next door to them. Once that business moved (closed?) that Del Taco location closed soon after. There was also a nursing home further down the road on A/D that I think gave them a lot of business
