The Cheshire Motor Inn, an intown landmark for more than seven decades, has closed. The motel, located at 1865 Cheshire Bridge Road, opened in the 1950s and closed in recent days, according to a source in the area. The motel reportedly hosted its last guests on October 12.
A note posted to the motel's office is hard to read as it's several feet away and behind the new fence, but it seems to confirm the closure and thank patrons for their years of business.
The 24 room motel had in recent years been a popular filming location playing host to Identity Thief (2013), A Walk In The Woods (2015), The Mule (2018), and Netflix's Ozark, season 3 (2020), among other productions. The motel was often used alongside its neighbor, The Colonnade, but while the restaurant has experienced a resurgence in the past year, the motel has struggled as Hollywood productions have fled the state, and its room revenue was limited.
The motel also included about a half dozen permanent resident units that were also vacated in recent days, with barbed wire fencing now surrounding the whole property. The rear of the property also included a small baseball field that we were told was used by traveling baseball teams in the 50s and 60s.
Related: Paces Properties announced plans in early 2018 to convert a 1960s motel at 1944 Piedmont Circle, about a half mile from the Cheshire Motor Inn, to a boutique mid-century modern "Bunkhouse" hotel. Ultimately, the Atlanta firm scrapped those plans and sold the property which was subsequently demolished and is now home to The Edley, a 392 unit apartment community.
The Colonnade Restaurant, which relocated from the corner of Lindbergh Drive and Piedmont Road to its current location in 1962, was sold last September, and its new owners, along with General Manager Scott Duke, have breathed new life into the classic Atlanta restaurant that will celebrate its centennial birthday in 2027. The restaurant, while part of the same parcel that includes the motel, is owned separately and remains open.
"The Cheshire Motor Inn has been a great neighbor to The Colonnade for many years. Together, the hotel and The Colonnade have been featured in many movies. It's sad to see another Cheshire Bridge landmark disappear," said Paul Donahue, Co-Owner of The Colonnade, in a statement to ToNeTo Atlanta.
Atlanta-based Selig Enterprises owns the roughly 4.5 acre property that includes both the motel and the restaurant. It remains to be seen what plans, if any, the firm has for the motel property in the near term.
