[EXCLUSIVE] Nam Dae Mun to Replace Shuttered Publix Near Chamblee

An affiliate of Atlanta-based Nam Dae Mun, a chain of international farmers markets, has reportedly purchased Shallowford Exchange shopping center (2562 Shallowford Road) near Chamblee and plans to open a new market in place of the former, roughly 29,000 square foot Publix, which closed after Christmas.

Prior to its reported recent sale, the 46,219 square foot center last traded in May 2018 when it sold for $12.5 million.

Nam Dae Mun Farmers Market, which opened their first store in 2005 on Shackleford Road in Duluth, today operates eight locations around metro Atlanta.

According to the company's website, the market is named after the Namdaemun Market adjacent to the Namdaemun Gate in Seoul, South Korea.

The company is not new to converting former Publix locations.

Nam Dae Mun previously opened in place of former Publix stores on South Cobb Drive in Smyrna, on Memorial Drive in Stone Mountain, and on South Norcross Tucker Road in Norcross.

ToNeTo Atlanta reported last April that an affiliate of Nam Dae Mun had purchased the former Sears at Town Center Mall, but nearly a year later the store has not opened, and the status of the project is unclear.

Another Publix that closed this past December at Atlantic Station remains vacant, but sources close to the property tell ToNeTo Atlanta that several would-be tenants have expressed interest in the space including one grocer.

Are you excited for a new location of Nam Dae Mun Farmers Market?  What is your favorite local grocer?  Where would you like to see Nam Dae Mun open next?

This is interesting as the area isn't particularly Korean. Plus H-Mart isn't too far away in Doraville. But I hope they do well, as a market is better than none. They will definitely need to understand the community in Oak Grove if they want to be successful, though.

My guess is a lot of the non Korean customers at H Mart are from intown. Maybe they can capture some of that market?

I agree it's a welcome addition but also people will miss hitting up that Publix on their commute. The new tenant needs to try to support that use case in addition to unlocking all the great stuff that Publix did not carry.

It's clearly meant to cater to Hispanic community not Korean.. All of their stores are slightly different. Commenters here clearly haven't been inside one

This is the comment. It will do quite well there. With the Kroger on Buford hwy and the Publix gone. This was a smart move. Aldi’s is the only store near without going to northlake, toco hills , or embrys hill.
