[EXCLUSIVE] Gap Closing Suburban Store as Chain Continues to Shrink in Size

The Gap store at Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody is closing.   The store is not yet advertising the closure nor is there any special sale, but store employees - referring to it as a "soft closing" - indicate that the store is to close sometime in May.

Gap has been a longtime tenant of the Dunwoody mall and occupies a roughly 6,000 square foot space on the second floor of the Macy's wing.  Banana Republic, its former neighbor and sibling Gap Inc. concept, closed in 2023 and was subsequently replaced by metro Atlanta's first Mango store.

It's unclear what if any immediate plans mall owner GGP has for the current Gap space.

According to The Street, Gap had by September 2025 closed 80% of its namesake stores as it continues to vacate legacy mall locations in favor of select lifestyle center locations.  At its peak the brand had more than 2,000 stores across the country but today that count is down to less than 400.  The company is also focusing its efforts on its better performing brands such as Old Navy and Athleta.

Gap previously closed other Atlanta area stores including those at Phipps Plaza in Buckhead, Avenue West Cobb in West Cobb, The Shoppes at Webb Gin in Snellville, Town Center at Cobb in Kennesaw, Atlantic Station in Atlanta, North Point Mall in Alpharetta, North DeKalb Mall near Decatur, Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth, Cumberland Mall near Smyrna, Northlake Mall in Tucker, Underground Atlanta in downtown Atlanta, and at The Avenue Peachtree City in Peachtree City.

Following the closure, Gap continues to operate store at the Avenue East Cobb in East Cobb, Avalon in Alpharetta, Mall of Georgia in Buford, and in Lenox Square in Buckhead, where the retailer closed on the first floor in early 2022 and in late 2022 reopened in a smaller space on the second floor.

Women's apparel retailer Talbots closed its stores on the mall's second floor this past December with ToNeTo Atlanta exclusively reporting days later that popular Canadian women's retailer Aritizia would open its second Atlanta area store in its place.

Are you surprised to see Gap closing its store at Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody?  What would you most like to see open in place of the current Gap store?  When was the last time you purchased something at Gap?
