The Residence Inn by Marriott in Buckhead has closed. According to Fulton County records, the 136 room extended stay hotel first opened in 1987 and spanned roughly 4.2 acres. According to a source close to the hotel, the property quietly closed at the end of July but only this week was the hotel removed for bookings from the Marriott website and exterior signage removed.
Fulton County tax records indicate the property last sold December 19, 2018 for $12.9 million. There was talk during the pandemic that the property was going to be converted to Section 8 housing but those plans reportedly fell through.
At least one online listing surfaced this week promoting limited availability and pricing for "Fusion Buckhead," furnished apartments at 2960 Piedmont Road, the former hotel's address. The initial offering is 530 square foot "studio/ 1 bedroom" apartments for $1,350.
Interestingly, the first Residence Inn, then known as "The Residence," opened in Wichita, Kansas in 1975 in a converted apartment building.
This will be the second hotel-to-apartment conversion in the area in recent years.

The 88 room Quality Inn at 505 Pharr Road was converted to "The 505 Collection" in 2023.
Elsewhere in metro Atlanta, a circa 1990 124 room Homewood Suites by Hilton hotel on Cobb Parkway near Cumberland Mall was purchased for nearly $17 million this past January by apartment developer Alliance Residential, which plans to demolish the hotel and build new luxury apartments in its place.

I believe this was the site for Sandpiper dinner-theater restaurant. It closed early ‘80s.

I don't think the Sandpiper was dinner theater. I know they had live music in the lounge (Judy Argo) but that was it. I do know that back in the mid-late 70's, one night some buddies and I were driving around and saw that someone had changed the marquee out front to read "Free c*nt". We still laugh about that.
