[ALERT] Locally Owned Educational Specialty Shop to Close Final Store, Go Online Only

After thirty years in business, the owners of The School Box have announced that they will be closing their store at Northlake Festival (4073 LaVista Road) in Tucker, the last remaining brick & mortar store for the locally owned school supply retailer.

Christine and David Persson, both just 26 years old at the time, opened the first location of The School Box in Marietta in October 1990.  The Perssons would ultimately grow the chain to a total of seventeen stores, the majority of which were in metro Atlanta, but included single stores in Chattanooga, Tennessee and Chesapeake, Virginia, too.

The majority of the retailer's stores were closed over the past decade, including former units in Buford, Peachtree Corners, Alpharetta, Conyers, Hiram, Dunwoody, Duluth, and West Midtown, as well as their two out-of-state locations.

The retailer has in recent years also operated a summer "pop-up shop" at the Glory Haus Warehous (1045 Cobb Parkway) in Marietta.

The most recent closure was in Morrow at Southlake Pavilion which quietly closed at the end of 2024.

The Tucker store is currently offering up to 35 per cent off almost all in-stock merchandise ahead of their permanent closure on October 29.

While their brick & mortar business is winding down, the Persson family will continue their two online businesses, schoolbox.com and schoolboxkits.com.  The Perssons launched the original website in 1998, the same year Google debuted, but four years after the launch of a little online bookseller called Amazon.com.

Do you have fond memories of The School Box?  Did you realize that The School Box was an Atlanta-based, family-owned business?  What would you like to see open in place of The School Box in Tucker?
