A New Zaxby's May Soon Hatch on Chamblee Tucker Road

Chicken chain continues growth spurt.

Athens, Georgia-based Zaxby's is planning a new location on Chamblee Tucker Road in Tucker.  The new restaurant would be built on the site of the current Bon Auto Service shop, across the street from the Kroger-anchored Embry Village shopping center.

The parcel, located at 3568 Chamblee Tucker Road, is about 2 blocks from 285, 1.4 acres, with 200 feet of frontage on Chamblee Tucker Road.  The current business has access to both Chamblee Tucker Road and Old Chamblee Tucker Road.

The proposed restaurant needs special approval for its drive-thru lane and has requested a reduction in the number of required parking spaces. There is a community council meeting scheduled for April 21st and a pair of Planning Commission meetings scheduled for  May 6th and 27th to discuss their requests.

Fried chicken has been a popular category in Tucker with both Popeyes and Bojangles' with locations under construction in the area.  The Popeyes restaurant is reportedly very close to opening on LaVista Road near Northlake Mall, while Bojangles' was delayed and is now targeting a mid June opening on Lawrenceville Highway near Northlake Parkway.

Zaxby's has a new location under construction on Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross and another coming soon to South Marietta Parkway in Marietta.  A third is proposed for Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.

I dislike this for multiple reasons: I took my car to Bon auto and I'm still grieving about their closure, not thrilled with the addition of only fastfood joints to the Embry/Northlake area, and there is already a problem with bad drivers driving east on Chamblee Tucker, stopping to make a left onto Old Chamblee Tucker, thus causing delays and near accidents behind them. The intelligent drivers turn left onto Northcrest and then cut through the Taco Bell or the office complex to get to Old Chamblee Tucker.

I'd be fine if this got shot down just like the proposed McDonald's on Clairmont near Briarcliff got shot down. Similar to much of Clairmont, there is no middle turn lane on Chamblee Tucker, which will cause serious traffic delays around the Zaxby's.

Really? An intelligent driver will use a private parking lot as a cut-through to access another road? I agree that left turns there can back up traffic but that's not a solution.

Bon Auto may have been a great repair shop but the place has always looked bad. A Zaxbys will be an improvement.

Can something now replace the gas station at the corner of Chamblee Tucker and Henderson Mill?

Yes, because using a private parking lot as a cut-through is better than obstructing east-bound traffic and possibly causing a rear-end accident on Chamblee Tucker.

Based on the satellite images, it looks like there's enough room on the north side of Chamblee Tucker to widen the street a bit, which would enable creation of a middle turn lane. But this would make too much sense.

Whether the modern stucco Zaxby's is more attractive than the classic 1960s Bon Auto architecture is debatable. The Grove took a similar structure and turned it into a nice bar.

Kind of surprised that Zaxby's is building one so close to their recent location on Buford Hwy and 285, which is roughly 2 miles away.

I still don't get the appeal to this place, their chicken just isn't that good. But their fans are many and devoted apparently.

Wish we had a Five Guys or something similar in the area instead.
