Let the Buzz Begin! Cook-Out is Coming to Northside Drive near Georgia Tech

North Carolina-based Cook-Out is bringing another restaurant to (the city of) Atlanta.

The casual burger chain, which recently opened locations in Statesboro by Georgia Southern University, in Athens by The University of Georgia, and in Augusta, will next open two locations in the city of Atlanta.

The first new Cook-Out restaurant will open in place of the shuttered Hooks Seafood & Chicken (originally a Mrs. Winner's Chicken & Biscuits) on Moreland Avenue in East Atlanta, just off I-20. The second will open at 1112 Northside Drive near 14th Street, not far from Georgia Tech.

The Northside Drive Cook-Out is taking the place of a shuttered Wachovia Bank.  I recommended the former bank site over a year ago to another growing restaurant concept, but was told at that time that the landowner had overpaid for the parcel at the height of the real estate market and was unwilling to take a loss.  Later, I learned that a number of quick serve restaurant concepts had interest in the parcel, but that each was turned off, or rather priced out, by the asking price.

Cook-Out seems ready and willing to pay up for premium locations, especially those in close proximity to universities.

A demolition permit was filed with the City of Atlanta October 3rd with the plan being to have the restaurant open by early next year.

Cook-Out's Northside location joins an area already crowded with burger options.  Krystal has an existing restaurant next door to Cook-Out's planned location. Modern and updated McDonald's and Burger King are located side by side across the street from the upcoming Cook-Out. Over on Howell Mill, even more burger options exist with YEAH! Burger, FLIP! Burger Boutique, and Wendy's.

Cook-Out's menu consists largely of burgers, hotdogs and chicken "cooked outdoors style," North Carolina BBQ, fries and over 35 flavors of milkshakes. Yearlong flavors like "Orange Push Up" and "Banana Pineapple" are among the more interesting milkshake flavors, while seasonal options like "Fresh Watermelon" (July & August) and "Fresh Egg Nog" (December) are also very popular.

Cook-Out has a cult-like following, and with this being among the chain's first locations in the city of Atlanta, expect great fanfare for this location.

This should be the final nail in the coffin of the 5guys right up the street.

@Roger,

HAHA! You are spot on! I'd already killed em in my head and forgot they were still open!

Thanks for the comment and readership.

5guys is the worst burger chain of all - greasy limp fries, and over cooked burgers at ridiculously high prices - bring on Cook Out

I don't think this will affect the Five Guys too much more than any other restaurant over there as there are already a ton of burger places like the article mentions. That god-awful excuse for a Krystal is doomed though.

Do you know if this will be eat-in or drive-thru only?

@Anon,

I believe that this location will offer both drive-thru and dine-in service.

Thanks for the question and for your readership.

Hey, do you have any updated information about this?

@Anon,

I don't have an official answer but there was a permit issued by the city of Atlanta on February 28th for "PLUMBING/ COMMERCIAL/ DEMOLISH COMMERCIAL BUILDING." I'd like to hope this means progress is imminent.

Thanks for the question and for your readership.

I'm from Greensboro and Cookout is far superior to any chain down here. Quality, price and menu rock.
